Some of you may have heard of the big flood in Minot, and north central ND (or maybe not, may not be newsworthy outside the local area). I would like to point out a few things that make me pretty proud to be living here.
Over 14000 people in Minot are displaced by the flood, yet less than 300 were in local public shelters. The rest have been taken in by family, friends, relatives or strangers. The above does not include the many other smaller towns, villages or homes all along the length of the Souris River who were also flooded who are coping just as well.
About 1/4 of the city has been destroyed or severely damaged, yet there has been no civil disobediance, and no reported theft or looting.
Over 4000 homes in Minot alone are still under water, not including the rest of the river valley and towns such as Burlington, Sawyer, Westhope, Bantry, Sherwood..... Today, during a press conference a US Govt Official (I can't remember his name, but he was with FEMA I think), said that he was amazed there hasn't been a single serious injury or fatality. I'm not really that surprised.
Thanks to the Emergency Services,( Law Enforcement, Fire, Public Works, Rescue, Infrastructure, Medical) the different city govenments, National Guard, Minot Air Force Base, Engineers, FEMA, Medical, and anyone I may have forgotten. And, last, but not least, The citzens of North Dakota.
