GT6 Why was the GT6 killed off?

Not the same - the lines on the GT6 are so much
more fluid& eyepleasing,& the "buck-toothed" grille
on the BMW reminds me of a Pontiac Grand Am.

Doug, wash your mouth out with soap.
Love that car

To bad it's not a convertible

They already make a version like that too.

IMO, if its aint called a GT6, it aint a GT6. Otherwise you may as well say the 240Z is a GT6. Id be happy with a BMW GT6, but considering the price, and the fact that they would never ever call it that, they would need to resurrect the triumph name plate

Actually I was told that someone from BMW started working for Pontiac, and brought the kidney grills with him. Since car manufactures decided that their vehicles must share similiar traits, and create sort of an image of what the brand was. This is why the front bumper of a cheap dodge neon, looks similiar to an expensive dodge viper. There was one year where all the suburus had similar bumpers, which only looked good on one vehicle, making everything else, including the STI, look hideous.

I'd like to point out that when BMW sold Rover they refused to sell the Triumph name with it. So that leads me to believe that the z4 m coupe is a throw back to the GT6

Does BMW own Triumph Motorcycles? I was just wondering being that BMW is a motorcycle brand too.

Triumph the Car company and Triumph the motorcycle co, had comon roots, but they split in the '30s

I think that the answer to the original question was that the GT6 was pretty much out-dated by the time production finished. The TR7 was just about to start production, so the sports coupe line could continue.
As a classic car I think the GT6 is fantastic. If only they made it in a larger size!

More like a Spit6 since it has a 6 cylinder.

BMW first started using the "twin kidney" grill in 1933. The earliest Pontiac started using anything like it was about 30 years later and it wasn't until the more modern era that the Pontiac grilles had shrunk to the size to look even more like the BMW grills, when Pontiac was actually trying to directly compete with BMW. Early 60's Pontiacs did have split grills, but they were huge and they shrunk from there. But I doubt they came from a BMW employee. Although it wouldn't be a big stretch to copy a theme, Pontiac did the same thing with "GTO" afterall.

Hm.... ....thats a bit of a stretch. I would say the 90s was when the grill really took off, but to be honest, they should of just left it alone:

The 90s trans am didnt have kidneys, why did the GTO?

Haha my dad has a 06 GTO (Holden Monaro).

They may be long and horizontal but that is still a twin grill design on the convertible GT0. This was when Pontiac was pushing the whole "wider is better" advertising slogan for the first time it accentuates the wider part. The GTO comment about Pontiac is dealing with a whole other car and a whole other "lifting" of an idea from a car where it meant something to a marketing idea on the Pontiac.

While they did create a two sectional grill, I don't consider it copying BMW. At the time BMW really wasn't heard much. What I see the grill as, is a version of every domestic muscle car at the time. Mustang, camaro, charger, challenger, you name it, they had HUGE WIDE grills. All Pontiac did was divide the massive area with a tiny bit of styling. Honestly though, if you take the kidneys out of an 80s or 70s BMW you have the same grille as the 60s/70s domestics

Just pointing out why people might believe that. Especially with Pontiac unapologetically taking marketing ideas from other Europeans automakers in the mid 60's. BMW's may not have been known in every household, but they were definitely known of in Automotive circles and by those that read any sort of sport car oriented automotive magazine.
