actually you can legally get the first gen elise in the US through a tuning company called Sun International. they modify it enough to meet safety standards, and then even better they replace the original rover unit with the 2 L honda B-16 powerplant. thats something like 210 hp, compared to the base elises 118. it doesnt come cheap though- about $55,000.
i think Sun International also imports various renaults (mainly clio sport) and some TVRs as well.
dont worry though- the new elise will be here in america in no time.

Yikes! $55k! You could buy a Corvette Z06 for that! (but they are very cool looking cars, I must admit!)
