As I read it, it was probably the robbers who called 911, rather than the homeowner.

Wouldn't surprise me if in the end it was a partnership gone bad. Perhaps the "robbers" figured to take some stuff they felt entitled to the rub salt in the wound by calling the cops to get the house checked.

"A few of the recovered items included numerous tools, a washer and dryer and two new toilets." which gave the police something to go on.
