Why is it so hard to get anything done right?

Alan-

A rant in reverse within your rant.

Although I am a poor working guy, I also live in a
very expensive town of wealthy professionals
who dwell within $$ gated communities like mine.

I have spent a bloody fortune trying to squeeze a few
driving miles from my TR6. Remember the $600. to install
a T/O bearing? $100 each to install u-joints I supplied.

Well, Monday Wendy's Jeep Liberty Special Edition went in
for it's 30,000 mile check up. Two days later we got
"The Call" from the dealer's account rep. Some issues had
been found that needed immediate attention.

A. ball joints - replace
B. rear shocks - replace
C. front brakes - replace
D. all engine belts - replace

We picked up the Liberty this morning and brought our
bank's loan officer with us so we could quickly finance
the National Debt we knew we were facing.

The Jeep dealer charged us $540 for parts and labor.
We were both stunned at the low cost... considering $1,000
gets almost nothing fixed on the TR6.

A shame I can't take Crypty to the Jeep mechanics.

That's a lot of parts and work for $540.

d

Dale - how much do you race and off-road that Liberty?

Jeez - I've got a Mazda with 110K miles and it still doesn't need new ball joints. I replaced the front brake pads myself (*very* easy to do) at 100K miles, and the original rear brakes are still good to go.

Does that Jeep garage have an unusually large set of pictures of the owner's yachts and vacation homes?

Tom
PS - I took the Mazda in for new tires a year ago. The garage did a "safety inspection" and said the front suspension was totally shot and needed full replacement. After getting the new tires and thanking them for the "inspection", I went to two other garages and asked them to check the suspension. None could find any problems at all. Hmmmm.

Dang, doesn't speak well for a Jeep Liberty if it needs all that after only 30,000 miles. Brakes I could reluctantly agree with; a coworker has a Jeep Grand Cherokee and supposedly brakes don't last long on it since he had to change them at 30,000. Either that or Jeep service likes to change them that often.

The rest of them sound kind of like you got taken for a ride though. A serpentine belt can go much farther than 30,000. My Honda has 55,000 on the original, and shows no signs of cracking or glazing. Ditto for my Saturn, which I changed at 60,000 only because the service schedule called for it. That Saturn had over 128,000 miles when I traded it in, and the suspension was in great shape for being all original, even living in the land of potholes.

yeessh! Isn't that a bit soon for having to replace all those parts? Also, wouldn't Jeep's manufacturer warranty cover those parts? Or are you already past the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty coverage? Or does the standard warranty we get on the main land not apply in Puerto Rico?

vping, chappaquah hay next time ya go past the x pres. clintons house take a look at the big double doors with side lights i built and installed them for the doctor just to the right, stuko house. i also played drums at the "kittle house" saturday eves and sundays.

I've made the comment many times lately that it seems things have reversed.

When one was in a sales role you kept the following in mind:
use to be .....UNDER COMMIT and OVER DELIVER
now tendency seems to be OVER COMMIT and UNDER DELIVER

it is a shame!

Will do. I am headed up there mañana for a christening. She's rubbed elbows a few time with the Clintons at some charity events. She's outta there as I am also going to look at a house with her up in Somers. Kittle House is a nice place but 'spensive as expected. Small world - I'm a drummer too and so is my Bro. He still lives in Chap but not sure if he gigs other than in HS.
If you are playing tommorrow night, what time? I might still be around.

At that price for that amount of work, he'd be lucky to have a dinghy...

Alan,

I agree the price was very reasonable.

The car is my wife's and is driven almost 100%
in heavy, stop and go urban traffic. That
takes it's toll on front brakes.

Rich folks run the government and live in mansions.
Therefore we have ultra low property taxes. That
yield no money for highway repairs. Potholes that
gobble up Mini Coopers are everywhere.

Black asphalt highways, stop and go traffic, tropic
sun yields cooked out engine belts.

$540 spent on a 4 year old car?? I'm well pleased.

I have averaged that amount every single WEEK we
have owned the TR6. For less than 300 miles of driving
I might add. I am very happy with the Jeep dealer.

Tinster...agreed very cheap for the effort...when it comes to mileage the type of drive has everyhting to do with it. In my case I drive 50 miles each way every day but only stop 3 times...once at the corner...once at a stop light and last at the office. 65 MPH all the way. I've got 130k miles on SUV and only has seen new tires and wheel bearings...

gb1,aha a "home boy" im from sheepshead bay, lets see GB perhaps gerritsen beach? if thats so i know you!

Dale-

That's a great price.

SWMBO's X5 needed front brakes, a control arm and a CV boot replaced at the last annual PA safety extort/h/h/h/h inspection. The stealer's quote was truly frightening. Well into the 4 figure range.

I bought the parts wholesale and did all but the CV boot myself, as I didn't have an impact socket big enough to get the hub nut off and the Snap-On guy wanted $100 or so for it.

If you can fix a Triumph, you can fix a Jeep

I priced cabinets and countertops... No way could we go the 'commercial route'. I bought a SawzAll instead. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Making the last of the "concave" cabinet doors now. My only beef with the installer (that'd be me /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif ) is he took for granted and didn't check the LAST guy's overhead end cabinet for level... I have a "downhill" end to be squared up yet. That'll be after all elase is done, tho. If we'd had to pay the fare it would have taken for this re-do with all the "non-standard" stuff it would have exceeded the house value.

At least we're starting to see parts of the tile floor I laid a few years back, been unexposed for MONTHS from having stuff displaced and PILED thru the hall & LR... continuing chaos.

vping, somers is also "purdy" and less expensive, things have changed at the kittle house if you havnt been there in a while look around the owner refuses to put any money into his business its a wreck even though the "kittles" (copper pots and pans) hanging on the walls in the lounge/bar area have significant historic value and worth a medium fortune, in the two years we had the gig they changed the chef three times, out of the keyboard player, guitar player sometimes a bass player a female singer and myself "sticks", the free dinners theyd give us would make at least one of us sick one night we all took ill if you look at i believe its called the "zaget list" youll still find a very high rating because of the extensive whine list they have, from what the owner mr. grabtree tells me its one of the top collections in the country if not the world hes so money hungry the reasonably adequate "stage" area that we used to play in turned from allmost comfortable to something about the size of a postage stamp so he could sqeeze in additional tables so we stopped playing there, while visiting a friend living in mt. kisco we went there for a cocktail to find a very tall very pretty and very friendly young lady with a great singing voice doing a solo keyboard gig, one of those "friend of a friend three times removed from the owners friends" got her the spot but she only stayed for a couple of gigs and also bid them adieu. we might be giging at a club called "onyx" near my house in stamford just have to bring the owner a demo c.d. they have great food and the owner is a gentleman how about you still playing out? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif
