Here in Central VA, it's almost TOMATO TIME! Yes, it's the time of year when the famous Hanover (i.e., Hanover Co., VA, NW of Richmond) tomatoes become available. They are delectible: large, meaty, with a wonderful texture and flavor. I've never tasted better tomatoes anywhere, and trust me, I've tried many.
Roadside vendors near Hanover County's small farms are among the first to offer them in late June. Mostly elderly farmers who sell their carefully tended tomatoes and fresh vegetables from a small covered roadside hut. Later, select small grocers in surrounding counties sell them. I've never seen them more than a hundred miles from Hanover County. The big box grocery stores never get them. I guess they can't buy them in large volume.
Hanover tomato nutballs like me know exactly where to look, I actually drive about 60 miles (each way) on weekends for a couple weeks early in season to obtain them. This is also a veiled excuse to ride the back roads, and we have some singularly lovely drives here.
This signals the REAL start of summer to me. I can easily consume 3 or 4 large Hanovers daily. If they were even slightly toxic, I'd have died decades ago.
Fried green ones are heavenly. I'm sure folks in heaven are rewarded with an endless supply . . .
