Why do people name their cars?

My first winter beater, after buying the GT6 was a 1970 Primrose Mercury Grand Marquis four door. The car was named for me by my coworkers after an old guy that worked with us, who had the same car. Forever after it was referred to as "Al". I bought a 1969 convertible Marquis a year later (different color) and was also dubbed "Al". My GT6 has no name, other than "spare tire" at one time. Father in law said I could carry it in the trunk of the Mercury and still have room for luggage.

Wow, about 5 seconds is all I could handle!

By the way, in most cases, you can use the video icon

on the "Full Editor" to actually place a YouTube video in a post. Just click the icon and the "paste" the URL to the YouTube video into the pop-up box

Anthropomorphism, pure and simple.

My 1988 Chev-er-lay half-ton pick-up truck is named Dale, because he's red.

I never gave it much thought until about 1973, when my great aunt gave me her 1951 Chevrolet De Luxe Sport Coupé. As she gave it to me, she reminded me that it was the fourth (and last) of the black Chevrolets she had owned and driven in her life, all named after the mythical flying horse. So my '51 has always remained Pegasus IV.

Some of my other cars over the years have gotten names, and others didn't. Some were obvious: Dad's Triumph 1200 convertible was Old Weird Herald, a reference/homage to Bill Cosby. I had a white '67 Volvo 144. Someone observed that being white, having a grille that looked like an old refrigerator shelf, and seeing as the light went on when you opened the door, it reminded them of a...Norge! The name stuck.

There were others, but I'll save that for...whenever.

Two of my current cars have names because they are more interesting than the other two, and some of the interesting cars in the past had names such as Eddie, the Lemon, and the Big Yellow Bird, but others were just referred to by the model or manufacturer names as they were more appliance like...

and yet it was my "first wife" who named the Midget Ms Triss.

Don't you just love this forum and how it brings out the best in people! :grouphug: Well------maybe?

I've never actually named a car-I can't, for some reason, bring myself to do it. My sister, however, has named every car she's owned, and insists on the rest of us using the names.

Farmers don't name their livestock because they would then feel like they were eating the family pet.

I feel the same way about my rolling (or jack stand bound) stock.

CANNIBAL!!!

For some reason, Fred doesn't come to mind when I see a smiling pig. But I guess stranger things have happened.

OK - how about "ARNOLD"? (As in Ziffel).

Did you hear about the poor rural community that collected empty food tins to get their children transportation to school? They collected SO many empty tins they were able to buy a BRAND new one! In appreciation the school board named it CAN-A-BUS!

another community gone to pot.

I don't name all my cars, and don't really know what compels me to give certain cars names.

My '05 MINI S was named "Lou Lou" because that's our black cat's name, and the MINI was black also. Go figure.

I now have a new Honda Civic Coupe (black) and will name it "wasabe" because it's Japanese.

My MG has no name, don't feel like naming it, yet . . .

In my experience, cars actually name themselves which is why of some of mine do and others don't.

My Grand Kids and Wife named our Midget, so I guess it has a name and a nick name:nonod:. The Grand Kids call it "Spridgie", and my wife named it "Miss Chuff" because of the license number (CHUFFED).
