From looking at the pictures did you ever verify the bearing gap to the crank with plastigage? If it is too tight then any little bits of debris will score the bearings. I dont see any copper so they are not too badly worn. The front #1 bearing is always the worse for wear in general and sometimes when you first start the car it will rattle a little bit and then stop. If it was too loose of a fit you would have bad oil pressure.....you had 15lbs at 800-1000 rpms when you should have had 20-22lbs so that would have been a sign to me that there is an oiling issue. Sometimes it pays to have someone else do the bearings; crank, rods & piston assembly work for you.
 
How do I remove the part of the dip stick broken off in the block?
 
no, it is actually two peices pressed into the block, one where the dip stick goes into the block and one to keep the tip of the dip stick away from the crank
 
Make sure you check your front cover for wear inside the oil pump housing. Over time the steel oil pump gears wear circular grooves into the pump housing. This will result in lower oil pressure. In particular at lower engine speeds as the oil squeezes past the wear grooves instead of being forced into the oiling system. Good used TR8/SD1 front covers are getting very hard to come by. The last 2 Rovers I helped with ended up going with Buick covers. One was a stock piece from he 3.8 turbo and one was an aftermarket race cover. Both required reengineering all of the front pulley driven accessaries to get them to line back up with the crank pulleys. At least we got to use some very inexpensive Buick water pumps and cover gaskets with them.
 
Major, also do an oil pump feeler gauge test for wear. Not sure if this is what Todd was discussing but it made me think of it
