Why can't I use an inverter on this?

We just bought a new pottery wheel. 1/3 hp (248 watts) DC that runs off of AC current. I have a 1500/3000 inverter and it won't power it. If I put in on the lowest setting it makes the lights flicker but the wheel doesn't move. If I turn it higher, everything shuts off. Is there any way to go from DC to AC back to DC again w/o rewiring?

Why won't this work?

My studio is way up at the front of the property so I can't run electricity directly to it.

Startup draw is pretty high on those motors. If you could spin the wheel up pretty fast by hand (to speed?) and then turn on power you should be able to use it.

How are you getting the 12V DC to the inverter? It needs to connected straight to the battery with cables that will handle at least 40 amps, not a cigarette lighter.

Yep, using the big cables it came w/ straight to the battery.

Over 3K on a 248 watt motor? IIRC, I tried to spin it by hand.
 
You mean you do not have one like this?
