just out of curiosity ... why would the same bidder bid $30,100 three times within a few minutes?

They increased their top bid 2 more times -- when I looked all showed as automatic bids.

This is what people do (bid early) though I always just do one bid with a couple of seconds to go with the maximum amount I would pay. Don't see any point in tipping my hand or stimulating the bidding by others (or for that matter, getting caught up in the bidding enthusiasm). Bidding may be fun on small stuff but on the two cars I have bought on ebaY I considered it a business transaction to be approached with minimal emotion and an eye to getting the best possible deal.
 
Knowing the bid went that high will help keep me out of depression dealing with this:
