Who to buy parts from?

Most parts are made by Moss anyway. The main thing is shipping, tax and customer service. Some parts actually are better from one supplier than another, depending on what the part is. Most often you are best off repairing or restoring original parts than replacing with new ones. The majority of the new parts being sold for these cars today are junk compared to what was offered when the cars were new.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif but for the gotta have stuff I use MOSS....Until recently I had no issues with them for 30+ years, but recently they've screwed me around quiet a bit...but I think everything is getting to that point now.

Bud -

Try Tony at The Autoist: https://www.theautoist.com

I have not used Tony yet (gathering my list as we speak), but others on the Spridget list have said that his prices and service are good. Tony is an authorized Moss and VB distribitor.

Tony is better than good. Started out being a parts place and became a good friend. No way you can go wrong useing his services.

FWIW, I do not particularly care for “generic” parts, or “white box” parts as I have heard them referred to.

I prefer original manufacturers parts when they are available. (Girling, Lucus) Given a choice I would rather buy something used, and then have it re-built, over a new generic part.

For example, the PO of my car removed and lost the carb heat shield. I never considered buying a new one, instead I went to a reliable source of used parts and asked them to find one. They produced three, gave me a choice and charged me $50, which I happily paid.

Last month, my clutch master cylinder failed. I never even looked in any catalog, I went to the same reliable source and asked if they had, or could order, a Girling master cylinder. They had them in stock, it cost $100. I just looked on-line at a “usual suspect’s” catalog, it lists for $75, who knows where it was made, or who made it…

I’m lucky, I have two sources for used parts, each has dismantled 100’s of LBCs, (they each advertise in Hemmings), and one of those is a very good source for new parts. He ships to every corner of the globe and has been in business, at the same location, since the 1960’s. I have no interest in his place, other than I hope he stays in business for a long time. The name of the place is Midtown Auto. https://www.britishusedautoparts.com/

I’ve heard nothing but good about Tony (The Autoist) and if I ever have a need for a Moss part, I will use him.

Guys, thanks for the compliments...while I do a lot of Moss parts, I also have buildings full of used parts, do Victoria, Engel, MacGregor, Robbins, & a few UK suppliers...& I'm always looking for new parts sources to fill your needs.

Depending where u are in Maryland I've had very good service from British Racing Green in New Castle Del.plus no sales tax in Del.

Tony - still looking for that heater inlet pipe for 79 Midget - dryer vent looks terrible. Should be placing order this week (Had to make donation for website hosting & bought 2 BCF t-shirts first). Also changed your logo on website - still need Basil to send me a larger one - BCF is at top of page and has smallest link.

Having just replaced the master and clutch slave on my E-Type I vote for using original manufacture parts. Many of the Lucas/Girling hydraulic parts are still made and I agree that it is best not to use the "white box" stuff if you can get rebuildable originals. Some items are wear items and can not be sourced, but most everything can be rebuilt. Using a reputable dealer is a must. I use Terry's Jaguar Parts in Benton,IL for my Jag and have a great relationship with them. A great bunch of guys!!!

Still looking, Bud...& I like your links page!

Not a bad idea...I do have customers who send extra money & have credits.....I could print up gift certificates if you guys would like....what increments do you think I need to do so they'll be ready for Christmas (& not a bad idea for supporting car shows either)....

Actualy, I could just make generic ones & fill in the amounts when I signed them....down to Kinko's tomorrow!

Ha, go to his cite, he has gift certificates in spades.
