when you have human ingenuity. To put it short. My spring compressor just wasn't working. I couldn't get the springs compressed enough to put them on the valves without them flying across the room when they slipped out. So instead my dad and i thought of a plan.
Tools;
15/16 wrench
Human strength
How: Put the ring end of the wrench on the spring and press. WHA LA!! Each ring took about 10 seconds to place.

Don't forget the block of wood under the valve!

But, was it a one man job?

Ahhh, more shade tree stuff. Right on.

It can be done by one person but not very easily. For me yes I did have another persons help. For one person to do it u have to lay the little tabs down on top and press hoping they will fall in place. I did it once but after that I had help.

This sort of operation can also be done with the head on the engine, my son Peter and I replaced the stem seals like that.

The trick involves a length of rope...

Really, you really did that. I have heard of that but have never seen it done.

Grats.

The rope works great. I used regular clothesline rope on my Sprite and on my brother's MGB.

Yes, and a great father / son project as well.

Haha, good on ya, my son is 50 next week. Guess I got to pass at this point.

Shucks he has a new girl friend, his age, they like a couple of teenagers, maybe it is not too late at that. LOL
