White Knuckle Speed?

I've been trying to regain some confidence
in Crypty after he dumped gasoline all over
the hot exhaust manifold in a vain attempt
to burn me alive. Today I ventured out of
the neighborhood and onto the expressway.

Crypty has a busted speedo cable... for now.

With a death grip on the steering wheel and fully
expecting to be engulfed in a raging inferno at
any second, I took Crypty up to 3,000 rpms and held
him there for about a mile. Took the first exit for
a quick U-turn and made it back home alive with no
fires to report.

About how fast was Crypty going at 3,000 rpms?

thanks,

d

if you're in fourth gear?

I'm thinking 54mph.

if in another gear ... well, you probably don't want to press your luck!

Tom

If you have the standard 3.70 to 1 ratio rear end with the 4 speed non O/D, I think that I remember the speed to be about 68-70 mph. I really can't be sure, but I think that I'm close.

I hit 4,000 RPM in 4th all the time when I'm late for work. My speedo cable's been busted for a while. I don't know if the law enforcement dudes are going to buy that or not. I should slow down.

Good luck,

according to the formula that I have, you should be somewhere between 57 & 60 mph

rolling distance(tire circumference)*RPM/ dif.ratio*1056

1) Did you see a vortex curling off the side mirrors?
2) Were the rest of the cars standing still?
3) Did the light poles look like a picket fence?

If you answered yes to any of these you were somewhere between 60 and Mach 1.

Actually my speedo indicates around 70 at 3000. My tires are 215-65-15 on 6" wide rims. The rear is stock, no OD.

Whatever the speed I'll bet it was exciting and satisfying. Good job!

I'm running 205/75/R15 tires, no OD, stock rear.

It was exciting but really quite terrifying waiting
to be enveloped by fire and burnt to death from a carb
overflow.

Like every time I push down on the clutch pedal I still
expect to feel a pop and the pedal goes to the floor
suddenly with a pool of hydraulic fluid on the highway.

Dale,

I hate to say it, but you have two options:

1. Sell the car and buy a Miata
2. Just drive it and pray like the rest of us

The latter option is much better, because anyone can buy a Miata, but real men (and women) drive Triumphs. It was a freak thing and it will be better the more that you drive it.

And forget about that front suspension for another six months or 10,000 miles.

Paul: "buy a Miata"??

Sat in one last year in a show room......
just before purchasing the Grey Ghost custom Wrangler.

Why downgrade to a Miata when I have a moderatley well
restored 1969ish TR6?

Hey I'd rather go out as a ball of flaming TR inferno
than squashed by a run-a-way truck in a lowly Miata!

Sell the internationally infamous Crypt Car?
Ignition switch @ $39.
Radiator @ $350
Carbs @ $650
New tires @ $750
Rebuild rear end @ $2500
New clutch and Hydraulics @ $3,500
New entire car electical system @ $4,000+
DPO Pedro @ $10,000.

Driving Crypty along the beach highway?.......

Priceless.

Glad you still have a sense of humour!
Very important for long-term owners.
3,000rpm should actually be a fraction over 60mph; the earlier cars were exactly 20mph per 1,000 rpm, but with slightly bigger tyres the TR6 is a few percent higher.

Brave man to go so fast on such a small island!

As long as your tach is reading accurately (they can be way off, mine was...), 3000rpm in fourth gear (straight through, no overdrive) is about 55-60 indicated mph (per the other posts), using the US speedometer which is calibrated for the US 3.7:1 axle. Assuming the stock axle and stock tire size are fitted, that would be true mph ('GPS mph' or 'mile post mph' if you like!) If you have a taller tire (205/75/15 is a tall tire, do you mean 205/70/15?) your true mph will be higher, and vice versa.

Side note - if you had a numerically lower ratio axle (e.g. 3.45:1) and stock tires and US speedo, you would actually be turning the rear wheels faster for the same 3000 rpm and 55-60 indicated mph - i.e. your true mph would be higher. And vice versa on that one too!!... Pete

Driving Crypty on the beach highway-Priceless!
I agree Dale, and passing a truck, even better.
This car is now becoming the friend it was supposed to be when Wendy bought it. Pedro just didn't count on the power of BCF:
Everyone for the common cause!

So David,

How goes school?? Long days with homework
at night. I'll be you can't watch TV or have
cookies until your homework is completed.

Now that's what I've been waiting to hear! Even if I did have to needle you a bit to finally get it out of you.

It's awful. The girls won't let me play with the dog team or even change the oil in the snowblower until all my homework is done. It's so bad, my mittens have dried and now I have to get them wet before I can make snowballs.
Just kidding of course, My days are kind of intense as we are doing eight months of schooling in two. It will all be worth it when we're done. Hope to see you in the summer.

Not very fast at all, these old beasts will rock and roll. I regularly run my TR4 to 4500 in fourth and over (OD). Figure I am running about 110. Redline should get close to 120. If you get busted, so what. Pay the fine, if you have been with your insurance company long enough they are not going to raise your premium, if you live long enough they are going to raise it anyway. Look, your kids are going to put you in a raisin farm and claim your assets, wadda ya got to loose? Put your right foot down. Not driving anywhere this evening, time for another Dickle sour mash.

Took Crypty out yesterday late afternoon for
20 minutes of bumper to bumper, stop and go
end of week work traffic. I'm trying to build
confidence my clutch hydraulics won't explode
again.

The new braided SS line held up just fine, the engine
temp hit maybe 195 degrees and I made it home without
being on the "film at 11" news as a raging fireball.

Put new air filters and the chrome air box on this
morning. Taking the red Mako out for some early morning
Snook fishing. Maybe even some Mahi Mahi, Tarpon or Cuddas.

Hey Doc Bill! I'll swap ya a day in the Mako in trade
for you installing new floor pans in Crypty! Seeing
you are the floor pan guru, that is.
