While it is apart...

I am having engine trouble (pistons/head) and so I am pulling the engine apart. While I am doing this is there anything that would be recommended to upgrade/fix or improve? I just don't want to put this all back together and wish I had done something else while I had it this torn down.

Generally you would want to replace main/rod bearings & thrust washers as a minimum.

Also inspect the tappets for wear on the bottom surface that rides the cam; you will probably find some breakdown/pitting of those surfaces and affected ones should be replaced or they will wipe out the cam eventualy.

Have a look at the rocker shaft while it's off and inspect for wear.

As for upgrading stuff; depends on how much spare cash you have lying around

Not as much as I would like! Thanks for the advise. I am planning on replacing anything that looks worn but I know there must be things that wear out. The previous owner didn't replace much and the car is pretty much original. Now that I am trying to drive it everyday I want to do it right and make it run better.
