Which water pump pulley would you use?

OK, lets say you have a early Sprite/Midget, and it came orginally with the sheet metal single groove water pump pulley on a 948, but now you are using a 1275 and are going to switched the car to alternator, would you still use the early sheet metal single groove water pump pulley or the later cast two groove pulley, was the only reason for the second groove, the air pump, oh and if you had to buy a alternator from stratch to do the switch formn genorator, would you go with the alternator off the later Midget or is there a better/cheaper solution from another aplication. Thanks.

Felt like opening a can-o-worms?

You can use the single groove pulley, but it require a 1/4" or so spacer behind it. This is how the home market cars are. The second groove only ran the air pump.

I prefer a Lucas alternator, I think the GM/Delco units are too bulky. Some people use smaller units (maybe bosch).

Hap, when I made the switch to an alternator, I went with a unit from the Datsun B210! The main reason was that is a simple, one wire hook-up, and is reasonably priced! I have a 1275 in my BE and retained the cast, dual-groove pulley since everything lined up nicely as far as belt alignment. I did have to fabricate the mount for the rear of the alternator, but that was a simple exercise!

Nippondenso and don't look back.

Datsun B210 Pick-up! (That's how long I've had mine...they're all Nissans now!! )

Not really, I don't work on cars, other than my own, I'm bench builder and automotive machinist,so stuff like alternators, heater cores, window regulators and alot of street car stuff, thats not related to race cars, is not what I know alot about.

Pufft, when Hap speaks we all listen. And closely I may add.

I have had ~One OF These~ on my race Spridget since it was a street car...at least 10 years.
No problems. Nippendenso
It's a small (35 amp) unit that provide plenty of juice.

I actually modified the large diameter pully from a Lucas air pump to fit it (to slow it down a bit). Still no problems even using headlight and heater in winter. Ran it in a four-hour night night enduro (at Summit) with 4 giant add-on driving lamps....no problem.

I'd used the newer (1275) water pump and machine off the extra pully.
