TR2/3/3A Which oil cap decal is proper to use with this cap

This is the cap that was on my TR3 when I bought it in 1976. Was West Virginia chrome for decades till now. Going to proper color and decal. Anyway my commission # starts TS677... Doing searches on BCF and Google with minimal luck. Did see one like mine with the dimples that had the wagon wheel decal and many others that had the target style decal but with out dimples in the cap. Which is correct?

Stumped.

Almost every photo I looked at were cars that have been restored at some point and thus are inconclusive. Keith D made a study of this awhile back so perhaps he will be able to help.

...Was West Virginia chrome for decades till now...

Am I correct in thinking that is rattle-can aluminum paint?

I thought the TR3 caps were all chrome...and the TR2 caps were black??? I can tell you what goes on a black TR2 cap.

I would go with the pie shaped one. I have a picture from an original owner car that states this is the original cap. The image is not exactly the same as the one you show but I've found at least 7 different style prints on the caps from TR2-TR3B. The TS number is very close to your cars number TS669... The dimpled cap that you have is correct and should be black, but there have been some Hammered Silver caps found. I've had no luck posting pictures with my new computer on the BCF but I could send you the picture by email if you send me a PM.

Thanks Keith but not necessary now. Got your same answer from another forum and went with that.

FWIW - This is what the TRA Judging Guide says. Not specific enough to really answer your question though.

The early and late caps are similar in appearance. Both are domed with mesh breather filters in the bottom. The
early cap has a flat top profile; the late cap profile has 3 thumb grips, and a round, domed, profile. Early caps are
black. Late caps are found painted black or hammer-tone (specific color unknown) gray.

Decal. A decal is fitted to the oil filler cap tops. Two basic styles of decals are used. The early decal is divided in
a pattern of concentric circles. Later a pie pattern decal was used. The following variations are known:

TR2/3 -- Large concentric circle decal, black with white markings.
TR3A -- Large pie-pattern decal, black with white markings.
TR3A -- Little concentric circle decal, black with white markings fits caps with thumb-holes.
TR3A/3B -- Little pie-pattern decal fits the caps with thumb-holes.
TR3B -- Little pie-pattern decal, Red with white markings (only observed on some TR3Bs with hammertone caps).
