Which GPS?

Anyone use the GPS app on a smartphone yet?

I do...they work just fine for me and are free, except for the data usage (which is miniscule).

I use the GPS feature on my smart phone. It's good just make sure you have a way to charge it while you drive. The feature sucks the life out of your phone battery. I would also recommended the Yelp app. When you arrive at a location it can help you locate almost anything. And gives you reviews also.

I usually just use google maps on my cell phone as well. I have a cell phone charger for the car, so the battery use doesn't bother me.

Whenever we take a long trip, I bring along my android tablet. It has only wireless connectivity, but I can make my cell phone a wireless hub, and the tablet is much easier to read the maps on.

Smartphones do so much these days... I've heard you can actually make a phone call on them. :playful:

Any time I need a GPS and see no need to buy a dedicated GPS.

Advantage: I own it anyway; software is free- there are lots of different software packages each one seems to have some special idea or may be better in one location or another.

I currently use WAZE (apparently just sold to Google) and M8 on my (android) phone. Both of which do a good job at navigation. WAZE is has a huge advantage if there are sufficient users that it give real time information road conditions since it knows what the average speed of its users is and provides warnings if there are traffic problems.
M8 seems to provide more "off road" info and can handle non driving instructions also.

Disadvantages: smaller screen than "dedicated" unit (but on a 4.3" phone it is large enough) besides it talks so most of the time you don't need the screen anyway, need to plug into charger or it runs down the battery.

I used Telenav until recently. I liked it, but now i use Waze. The ETA is more accurate, the price is right (free), and it gives up to the minute traffic reports from other drivers, such as hazards (vehicles stopped, police, etc). Have only used it in the Chicago area so I don't know how it is one the open road.
