Which cars are going to restored in the future?

Re: Which cars are going to restored in the future

Really intriguing thread!

My earlier comment was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but the basis is that I just don't see much in the way of innovation or originality in cars that have been produced since the early seventies. That is, with the possible exception of electronics and engine design. Neither of which has the kind of appeal that new cars once did.

There just doesn't seem to be the excitement that cars once held. When was the last time you anticipated the unveiling of a new car year? Ironically, about the cars that ARE being anticipated are remakes of the ones we grew up with!

The automobile has passed from being an object of desire (!) to a basic necessity. And there's a certain cookie-cutter feel that cars have these days; they all look alike to me. And with gas prices going up, who knows what kind of effect that's going to have on the love affair we once had with cars?

Re: Which cars are going to restored in the future

It'll KILL 'em.

Re: Which cars are going to restored in the future

Many of the cars listed have rather primitive, multi computer management systems.

Newer cars are actually becoming more simple...
Although there are less serviceable parts.

So who is going to make a low production module for some obsolete car?
Probably no one...But...

These cars may be retrofitted with the newer technology so long as the production numbers/demand is capable of catching the interest of some garage entrepreneur.

We may be down to a sophisticated computer, 1/2 dozen sensors and a cat soon.

Still leaves the original question though.

And I think most newer cars are ugly.

Cars will become much like TV's and VCR's.
Disposable. Not built with the same simplicity and
lasting integrity to stand the test of time.
We'll be a dying breed.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling...

But then again, there could be hope. She's very
pretty....and the car's nice too.

Basically the reason I posed the question in the first place but I would substitute boring for ugly. Almost as exciting as buying a new refrigerator. (with some exceptions)

I think the future of the hobby is also going to be affected by the hobbies of kids today who are more interested in computer games than cars (for the most part)

As for the Alfa very nice, but I still would rather have the 1600 Junior parked by my office on a regular basis.

Re: Which cars are going to restored in the future

I wonder about the early Saturn Twin-Cam coupes with the hideaway headlights. I always thought those were one of the best-looking and coolest American cars ever. I was really irritated when GM made changes to Saturns. But it looks like the Ion coupe is the early car's spiritual cousin LOL.

It's kind of hard to imagine someone wanting to do a showroom restoration on a recent Toyota Camry or Chevrolet Malibu, but when you think about it, more than a few cars that you see at present-day car shows filled that niche back in their day.

Re: Which cars are going to restored in the future

I replaced a faulty ECM in a friend's 94 Civic over the Thanksgiving weekend. $80 Beck Arnley aftermarket bit. Yesterday the coil died and AZ got another $80. There aren't likely to be many companies manufacturing those type of "specialty" bits (all of that stuff is housed in the dizzy) down the line 20 or 30 years from now. It's criminal IMO. What should be a common part (since it's a wear item) has come to be something which will FORCE someone to purchase another car. Or MacGyver a readily available thingie to 'interface' with the system. Look at what the Cubans have gone thru to keep their 50's era Dee-troit lumps goin'. Russian tractor engines/drivelines under old Chevys 'n Caddys... gotta be dedicated to pull off that kinda nonsense.

Re: Which cars are going to restored in the future

So far as production numbers go...
I'm guessing these will be restored in the future.
(I only listed "sport cars")

#1 Miata
#2 BMW Z series
#3 Porsche 911
#4 Toyota MR series
#5 Honda S2000
#6 Lotus Elise

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]fixing body dings in metal is is one thing, but the cracked plastic bumpers and other body parts are a real challenge. [/QUOTE]

Perhaps technology will tame that problem, as necessity takes over as the Mother of Invention once again.

As Dave said earlier, the kids of tomorrow may come up with a way to fix plastic just as we no longer "lead" panels together.

Re: Which cars are going to restored in the future

I'll probably still be doing the two I have been doing for the past 7 years. A 55 Chevrolet and a 62 bn7 Austin Healey.

Speak for yourself, Paul. I've still got my paddles and know how to use them! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

yeah, but we've "progressed" to embrace Panel Bond & AllMetal here.

Had a couple hundred pounds of lead on-hand when we shut down the shop... durn-near couldn't give it away. The old tinker who got it was pleased with himself. We kept the paddles, tho.

Re: Which cars are going to restored in the future

BOTTOM LINE! There will always be antique cars to restore and there will always be people like us, (Car Nuts), to restore them. As technology changes the technique of restoration, we will change with it. It's a matter of record. Just think, every once in a while, their still finding old model "T" Fords, plus others, in barns 90 years later. A 100 years from now, someone might say, WOW, I just found a 2007 Ford Thunderbird in a barn! WHATA FIND!
