Where were you on 9/11

I was in De Gaulle airport in Paris, waiting for a flight to Amsterdam. The guy I was travelling with had stepped out to call his wife, and returned white as a ghost. He told me what had happened, and it just didn't compute. The plane was delayed, no surprise, but when we got to Schiphol, the people on flights that had been turned back were waiting in a huge mass to get into the country--probably a couple thousand people funneled into one corner with a couple passport agents. Since we were coming from an EU country, we just waltzed in.

I finally saw the reports on a huge video screen while waiting for a taxi. The Dutch cops had things under remarkably good control--they told every free cab to come to the airport, and were staging them outside the airport, and dispatching them into the airport at a sensible rate, so traffic didn't bog down.

We got out of the place and to our hotel quicker than we had any right to expect. Fortunately, I had a few guilders with me (pre-euro dsys) so at least I could pay the taxi driver.

We had been in Europe only a couple days for an expected three week trip. I was so depressed I would have just come home, but that was impossible. So, on with our job.

I was living in inner Copenhagen and just got home from the university. My wife had just come home with my 6 year old daughter and got a call from our Serbian neighbour telling her about the first plane. I turned on the tv news and stayed glued to the tv all evening while trying to impress my daughter that this was serious. She has actually been to see ground zero a couple years ago, though I haven't been back in a long while.

Ukranian. Born in England, tho.

I was in Townsville Australia; got a call late at night from my fiance who lived in Chicago at that time. Turned on CNN and watched it all happen while my (now wife) cried. Couldn't help her at all being on the other side of the world. There were traffic accidents as other military personnel drove to the barracks in haste. We were all shocked, but we were ready for war.

It's amazing... the delivery package morphs until success. Then there's another.
