Well, Doug, since a kid is in VA, you need to move to the "Old Dominion"!!!
The Tidewater area around Suffolk is a bit busy/crazy, but there are good spots around there and the cost of living is great. Charlottesville, for example, has been rated the number one place in the USA by "Cities Ranked & Rated" and other indices: very low crime; good medical care; good cost of living; little or no traffic snarls; major university with tons of cultural activities, etc., the whole shebang. What's more, Thomas Jefferson still lives here

(at least it seems that way sometimes)!
I'll also add that the January, 2010 issue of "Car and Driver" lists Charlottesville as one of the nation's top ten areas for drivers/driving! Perfect, twisty, scenic country roads everywhere, with the Blue Ridge Parkway/Skyline Drive 25 minutes east of here.
Anyway, good luck with your search. Tough decision, but I'm sure you'll be happy wherever you go.
