Where to have transmission rebuilt.

I've noticed that after the BN7 sits for awhile (maybe a couple of weeks) it is very difficult, and noisy, to shift gears. Once warmed up it's much better. I believe this to be a syncromesh problem. Which of course brings me to my question. Where is a good reliable rebuilder? I don't want someone that opens the case replaces gaskets and oil seals coats the gears and calls it a rebuild, I've already done that. Nor do I want someone that insists on all new parts when not needed; in other words someone who's honest. Any reccomendations? I've never had any problems with the overdrive BTW so don't expect to have to rebuild that unit. I plan on removing the OD and bell housing for shipping is that all that's required?
Thanks to all for responding.

Hi Johnny,
I think there are a number of good rebuilders. Everyone has a favorite. Quantum Mechanics on the East Coast comes to mind. Also, Bill Bolton on the West Coast.

I would suggest shipping the complete unit. There is some stuff in the back of the bell housing that is critical to correct operation. The OD can be very difficult to get mated back to the transmission correctly. Besides, if you want a top rebuild, there "just might" that the OD also needs some work. They can operate pretty well just up to the moment when they die.

Yes Dave, those are some good sources. But do not forget Bruce at Healey surgeons he is one of the best IMOP on the Tranny/OVD.---Fwiw-Keoke

johnny, im also doing a rebuild on my bj7 o.d trans. fortunately i rebuild myself but after checking around the east coast to get an updated price on the job i had several of my close friends one with a bug eye two with big healeys give astoundingly negative revue on one of the afore mentioned rebuilders the bug eye trans had to be sent back twice the third time it wouldnt shift at all (stuck) the one in the big healey never did work properly again after being installed and remove five times, a local restorer and parts distributor dealing in such "sports and classics" (hint) involving a bj8 is now going around and around with one for the 4-5 time, i think if wanted mine done by someone other then myself id most likely shop the west coast.f.w.i.w

Dave mentioned this. However do not remove the bell housing it is virtually impossible to set the tranny up properly with out it.---Fwiw--Keoke

Well lets see:
Input shaft bearing has to be properly shimmed.

Shift rods have to be propely buffered and tensioned

Lay shft has to be properly orentated or novice will bust the bell housing.

Zat Enough??-- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

P.S. Having done a number of these buggers when I was young and foolish. Today I would get a Toyota five speed conversion and live happily thereafter.--- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/yesnod.gif

Ouch, I wish Ida posted before I decided to "look and see" myself. Maybe I caused the problem in the first place. Of course I didn't remve the gears from the housing but I did take off the bell housing and replace the oil seal. I also did remove the OD but didn't have a lot of trouble putting back in.
Has anyone had "Apple Hydraulics" do a rebuild?
I know, I hate to put people on the line; I just don't want to get stung. If it helps, please answer directly to me, at;

Many thanks to all in advance. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

I used Bill Bolton last fall. He did a great job at a very reasonalble price. He found the trouble very fast and replaced things the previous rebuilder left out(which caused the whole problem). He replaced parts only when needed. He even arranged to get me a part that was "not available" in a very timeley manner through a friend of his who has a lot of NOS parts. Shipping was done strapped ona pallet door to door via a UPS shipper on a freight truck. I give the experience an A+++.

Of course they do trans work, if "trans" is an abbreviation for; Transient!--Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cowboy.gif

keoke, no i meant trans. as in "transmission" im trying to keep my hand movement around my keeyboard to a minimum else run the risk of knocking over a perfectly blended rum and coke, i discontinued the use of the abbreviations "tranny" or "trannie" for having once used it on a search engine and havnt been the same since! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif
