where to get new pins for the trunklid hinges?

On our way back from the Texas healey Roundup we lost 1 of our hinge-pins (don't know how to call them). Moss only sells the whole hinge with the pin, so does Victoria British. Anybody suggestions on where to get a new one? We are not handy enough (yet) to make a new one ourselves...

HiMiranda.I do not think you are going to find that pin as a replacement Item. If that pin came out it suggests that the hinge or that pin was severly worn.Take a 10 X 32 SS screw and use it as a temporary replacement. These things come up on Ebay quite regularly, and in your case any one would do and yield a useable pin.-Fwiw--Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Ok, so maybe it is better to replace the whole hinge? Our car is shaking at certain speeds and the pin just wiggled out I guess. Our next project will be new shocks and wheels to get the shake out. We now still have the original wheels on.

Yes Miranda, replacement seems like a better approach. However, be careful as they are Handed and some aftermarket ones do not indicate whether they are LH or RH units.---Fwiw-Keoke

It would be good to check your hub splines carefully before installing new wheels. If the splines are worn they will quickly wear your new wheel splines. Here's a link on what to look for:

You may be able to get new (old) pins from someone like British Car Specialists since they have truckloads of Healey parts just arriving in every ad I've seen for the last 6 years /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Do you know anyone with a lathe? The pins could be made from steel rod machined for an interferance fit at the ends. A big vise can be used to press the pins into place.

Cheers,
John

That vice better have a set of soft jaws John, or you ar gonna bugger up some chrome.--Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Obviously! but a good point! My favorite for this type of work is cnc vise that has perfectly flat smooth jaws. Lay in a thin piece of polypropylene plastic to protect the chrome and ease the pin back in.

Cheers,
John

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif John,You mean you ain't got no soft jaws for your vice!----Keoke-AZ- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif

My alum soft jaws are so buggered I wouldn't want them to touch chrome. o.k. time to make a new set /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Yep, Ed thats why I shy away from aftermarket trim pieces. Actually I have also found the tips to be reversed on newly manufactured hardware.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Funny you mention that, I too coming back from the Round -up found one of my Moss trunk hinge pins 1/2 way out, and I was trailering! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm happy to report that after 2,014 miles our trunk hinges were still firmly in place. Don't now if they are original or replacements. As usual we had a wonderful time at Round Up and it was fun to meet and spend some time with sjoerd and miranda. Good luck on your return home and check out the Swedish Healey club web page for info on the 2008 meet.

Hi Bob and Jean. good to hearyou made it home safe. That was quite a trip for you guys! It was great to meet you in Kerville and we hope to run in to you in the future. Maybe in Sweden? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
We replaced both pins with stainless screws and cap nuts. Not original at all, but it'll do for now. At least we are not loosing our trunklid... We saved the one remaining pin and will have some new ones made after we move back to the Netherlands with the car.
