GT6 Where to find the right tire?

Hi All, we are finished with the TR7 rims and are looking for the tire to go with the Spit6. 13 inch must be a thing of the past. All we can find is a 185/70/13 Coker made by BF Goodrich and it's a Redline. Not that that is not a good thing, we would like to have a couple of choices. As we have to order these in any case, why not get the best people in the world to tell us which direction we need to go. I wanted the 195/65/13 as that would give the width for the look and not change the overall dimensions enough to be a big concern, but no one has these listed.
HELP! and thanks.

Wayne

George, Nice site, best so far and thanks for the heads up.

Wayne, we have Khumo Solus on our GT6 and General AltiMAX RT43 on the Spitfire. I have found them both to be good tires. The Khumos may be a bit better in the wet. The size we have been buying is 175/70-13. There are a few others brands in that size to choose from at Tire Rack.

Doug, Thanks will try them. We have the TR7 rims and they are 5 1/2, a little grinding on the caliber may be required for the rim fit, but we should be able to get a 185 under there with no problem. I was even hoping for 195, but that seems to be a no go in the 60 or 65 range right now.
Hope your fleet is doing well and you got your son's fixed OK.

Thanks Wayne. The son's Spitfire is drivable again. He reports the occasional "hiccup" while driving but still enjoys the car. Bodywork on the bonnet is postponed indefinitely.

I have no first-hand experience with tires wider than 175 on the Spitfire/GT6. I may be imagining it but I thought I read someone who posted that there were some issues with wider tires when at full steering lock. Then again... I may have imagined that.

Doug, Thanks again and good to hear the son's car is making his rounds, save a bunch of your time.
We ran 185's on the wife's '73 GT6, but it didn't have the roto-flex rear. I will keep you up to date on that. We autox'ed hers and the wider tires made us competitive at the more open events, like Charlotte Motor Speedway. We still love it but the wife has bad a ankle, we hope to find a fix Wednesday.

Finally going to paint the frame in the morning, been a bit cool even if it was just a frame. Don't know how to not be as good as it can for me. All seals done on the engine and will finish the tranny tomorrow. Rear end axle seals and front ready to be installed. It will be nice to get the parts off the floor, shelves and spare bedroom back on the car.

Still looking for a crunched front end of a Spit to cut a small section out. Take care and keep us up to date.

Hello Wayne,
195/65/13 is a rare bird these days. I was looking for 15" tires for my 944 last summer and was amazed at how little choices were left. It seems to be a 17"+ world.
I know you were looking for a 195/65, but tirerack.com has a few different 205/60/13 listed (although they are auto cross tires), as well as a Kumho 185/70 all season.

Scot, We put our minds together last night and other than a lot of dust in the room, we came up with a choice between the Kumho and
Cooper, the Red lines just priced themselves out of it for a run around car, ($800+). The Cooper seemed to fit the idea of what we wanted in looks, price and availability. I'll run some pictures by the Forum when the frame work is in place.
Thanks to all for the help.

Wayne
