Where is the brake light switch? 1978 Mg Midget

I have looked for this switch for 2 weeks, in the car by the foot well, under the car?, the brake lights worked -now they dont. Where is the switch? thanks Jim
 
The brake lite switch is under the hood, in front of the pedal box. it will have to green wires running from it and is screwed into the pedal box in front of the brake pedal. Basically in front of the master cylinder.

If you need a new switch there are several opinions here about where to get one.

Here's mine:
I bought one off Ebay and after 6 months it failed. The plunger part inside broke. I contacted the seller, he said he sells lots of them and this was a first. He offered to send me a new one if I sent him the broken one. (after 6 months!)

I did, he did, I put the replacement on the car & it's working. The green box with white lettering says "LUCAS" and has a part number: SMB422

One nice thing about this switch is that it has a hex head so you don't have to remove anything but the old switch to get it in.

It's gonna take a lot of swearing...

Remove the 8 bolts/screws that secure the pedal box to the foot well. You should be able to lift the pedal box just enough to remove the switch without taking anything else off if you are lucky.

If you don't want to save the old switch just break off the part that keeps you from turning it & get one like the one I mentioned above. Then you never have to move the box.
It does help to remove the cover - on my 78 the coil is attached to the cover.

Found it under the coil-just removed the coil and the pedal box cover and unscrewed it. How does it work-it seems to ground against the brake pedal arm? No moving parts that I can see. thanks Jim

Jim, there's supposed to be a plunger that contacts the pedal arm to actuate the switch. The switch is nothing more than a monentary contact push button.

Thats why it didnt work when I tested it. The surface is smooth-worn down. Ordered the switch suggested. I am just happy to find the thing. thanks Jim
