Where do I hide my radio?

I mounted a CD player in the glove box at the back so I still had some storage space in there. Then, two 5" speakers on the interior footwells and two tweeters mounted next to the seat on the sills with a amp under the passanger seat. I could still hear it well at speed with a Paco exhaust. Recently I installed a Harmon Kardon "drive + play" in my Land Rover. It is a FM transmitter unit with the added bonus of being able to plug it into the back of the stereo and eliminates interference. You also get a small monitor that shows you what is on the i-Pod screen which you can mount about anywhere as well as a very handy (and funky) mounted remote. All of these things are small enough that you could certainly mount them hidden and still within reach in the cockpit and the install is VERY easy. At about $200, I thought it was really worth the price of admission. I don't even use my CD Changer anymore.

Not sure I'm technically up to an ipod! My sister got one for Christmas and has turned into a downloading fool.

I have to have my bass. Maybe the glove box is an option, but I need all the extra space I can get in Binabox I think. I need to figure something out soon though. Gotta have a radio if we're running to Gatlinburg.

I like the idea of the speakers on the sills on the floorboard. There was already a hole in the center back for a speaker. Chuck was going to weld it shut & I told him not to. Figure if the trunk would ever not open, we could go through that hole (not figuratively speaking) and unlatch it. I'm not sure if we left it open or not.

well, I'm not sure how you wanna handle the stereo install, but any competent car stereo/audio shop should be able to handle a hidden non-intrusive/destructive (i.e. no metal cutting or drilling allowed) install.

But then, I guess you'd have to trust some unknown people to do the job right and not damage a classic... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Well that gives me comfort noonie.

yeah, well, i'm from the school of trust no one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I only contract out repair work on my car if I don't have the facilities to do it myself. There are less headaches for me that way. If something's messed up, I fix it, and no having to bother with trying to convince people they need to fix it again... ya know?

The one thing on my V8 car that I'm leaving to the teenagers is the stereo installation.

hmmm... if I had to contract someone to install a stereo, I'd make sure the installer is at least in his 20's. It's no guarantee but I just feel more comfortable with an installer that's a bit more mature and understands the value of a classic import, ya know?

You can get an IPod adaptor to transmit through an unsed frequency in your radio.

... or you can have a head unit with an aux. input and just use the phone jack of the ipod instead of the usb. An inexpensive solution. That's what I do. It sounds 99% as good. I did an A,B with my Clarion CD player which has the aux input, and it was really tough to tell whether it was the cd or the ipod.

The best sound coming from our commonly driven MG is from 3 litres of throbbing lorry engine, rather inadequately muffled....

I find that I rarely use a radio in the British stuff anyway except on my Interceptor, which I use for long trips and has a trunk mounted CD player.

3 liters, eh? Must be referin' to one o dem C types... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

I don't know how much room there is under the older dash but I would look at a pair of 5 1/4in component speakers that could be mounted up and under the dash and then mounting the tweeters flush in the door cap rail. If they are not already covered you could mount the speaker inside the rail and then you could perforate the leather covering over the opening for the tweeter.

If there is still space under the dash you could mount the radio under the passenger side of the dash and use the remote to control it or in the glove box if its big enough.

You will want a radio with an rca aux inputs. While Ipods are fantastic the sound quality not good when hooked up to a car radio. I have been using a Rockford Fosgate omnifi mp3 player in my truck for the last year or so and I no longer carry cd's. Its a 20 gig harddrive that can be mounted anywhere that plugs into your stereo via that aux inputs. Great sound quality and its very easy to use.

Omnifi's on ebay

Of course you could always just put a boom box on the shelf. Just think of all the fuses that would be spared /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Regardign the Ipod thing... plug it into the radio and use the speakers. Car stereos come pre-wired for such things now so it's brainless. Do NOT use headphones unless you want me giving you the "you stupid (#@%*! idiot" look as I drive by. It's dangerous and irresponsible, and in most places illegal.

FWIW...Bose, and others, make marine and outdoor speakers that can be mounted under the dash and pointed at you and passenger.

I saw this item advertised the other night:

https://www.soundmove.com/secretaudio.htm

It has a small display that controls all functions that can be mounted on a swivel so it can be pushed out of sight under the dash and the controller/head unit can be mounted anywhere.

One site describes it this way:

Secret Audio is a three piece hidden audio system that offers great flexibility for mounting in any type vehicle. The main receiver / amplifier unit is usually hidden under the seat or behind the dash. A 9ft cord from this unit goes to an LCD display. The small dimensions of the LCD display offers unlimited mounting options. The size of the LCD is 1.5" high x 4.125" wide x .75" deep. The LCD can be mounted in the glove box, ash tray, sun visor, console or? Included with the system are a flush mount bezel for console or dash mounting and a swivel bracket for under dash or surface mounting. The third piece of the system is the wireless remote control. On the SS Secret Audio this is a Radio Frequency (RF) remote. With RF you don't have to point the remote at the display. In fact you can use the RF remote from up to 40ft away and control all functions of the system and even the optional 6 disc CD changer. The S-1 Secret Audio has the same specifications as the SS except it has an Infra Red (IR) remote. With an IR remote you need to point it at the LCD display to operate the system. The IR remote works like the remote for your TV.
