Where do I hide my radio?

In Binabox? It's not a question of whether or not I'll have one. I'm putting the original AM radio back in, with the speaker box thingy, but I *NEED* my cd player. I'd like to hide it somewhere. Under the dash on the passenger side? The spare battery box with a remote? (I'd rather not because I change CDs regularly) I just don't really want it glaringly visible. Speakers are going to be bad enough unless I get those teensy little ones like Mangles' have in their A.

Is there a glove box?

for the speakers I'd have custom enclosures made to sit on the ledge that runs down the outside of the foot well. There they'd be out of sight from most angles outside the car, and NOT in the door panaels.

I had one up under the dash with a CB long ago if that works.

Get a portable player and rig an input jack under the dash. If you have to have a permenant model, the glove box or spare battery box (for a changer) would be good places.

Or... you buy a new stereo with a vintage faceplate. (search the web, there are companies doing this)

Or... you install a removable faceplate stereo and rig it so when you remove the faceplate, the rest sits less than flush with the dash. Then put the radio blanking plate on with magnetic tape. No one will ever know it's there unless you're actually using it.

Unfortunately the original radio in the early MGB's was AM only. I've decided to fab up a center console to replace the speaker with a radio in there, add a blanking plate to the dash and keep the original radio/speaker safe on a shelf. That way a few screws and a bit of wire are all that need to be removed with minimum effort, and reinstalling the "period correct" stuff is simple.

I don't even plan to wire up the original AM radio, I just want it in for looks.

Chuck, never thought about an Ipod. That could be an option. But I really love having the top down, the stereo blasting and zipping down the roads. I could still do an Ipod with speakers, out of the way, right? There's an adapter or something to play the Ipods through your car speakers I think.

speakers could go under the dash and the amp in the spare battery compartment or the boot. you could put an ipod jack thru the rear bulkhead

Janel...think remote control w/CD changer in trunk...Jerri's Mercedes has a built-in CD changer from the factory back there....you might even be able to go to a alvage yard & pick up the entire thing out of a wrecked Mercedes.

Check out the two small speakers mounted on either side of the inside of my windshield. They are small but I will put them up against all other speakers out there. I also have two other speakers mounted in the back from the trunk. The radio/cd player is mounted in the dash with a removable cover when not in car.

Tell us more about those little speakers - are they tweeters?

I have run into a /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gifBrain Freeze. For the life of me I cannot recall the make. I will check it out when home tonight and give you the specks. These little guys are fantastic when on the highway with the top down. I find that the speakers in the back get muffled when the top is down over top of them but the little guys up front make up for the sound.

Hey, where'd you find those? I've seen small, golfball-sized door speakers, but nothing like that before.

I will get all the info for you tonight when I get home. I am sure that they are made by Motorola but will double check. I will also send you more detailed pictures of the radio and hook up as well.
Al

They are tweeters, and don't do bass notes, but will reinforce most of the upper range of music. Very interesting mounting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif Looks like the wires are run behind the weatherstrip?

I would recommend on the sills down by the kickpanels too. a 4" or maybe a thin 5/14" speaker on each side. You can make an easy panel for them using very thin plywood, covered in vinyl to match the kick panels, and attach them to the kickpanels with velcro, or doublesided tape. The farther toward the firewall you put them, the more equal distant from both speakers to your ears, and the better soundstage you get.

As for the radio... I like Doc's idea of making a new console that can be easily replaced with the factory one... Or, if you can get one cheap, a second MG console that you won't mind cutting to fit the radio.

I have been using crutchfield for years and they are very helpful on the phone. I have not called about the BGT yet but I actually just got the catalog yesterday.
If I have them send you an catalog you & I both get $20 towards a purchase so let me know so I can suggest ya. Send me a PM.

BTW I have ZERO affiliation with them. I just like the layout of the catalog and their ability to help. The prices are not bad either. I have a Denon Cassette with a 10 Disc changer I am trying to fit into the BGT but not sure if I can.

I've always liked the layout and prices in Crutchfield, but I've never ordered from them. I usually use them for comparison shopping and then go to a local shop to get the product I want and contribute to the local economy. However, I was living in smallish towns back then. Living in LA, I have no qualms about mail order anymore, except for getting my car books from Auto Books in Burbank that is ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
