Where can I get transmission parts

I have a 1960 BT7 with side shifter and O/D.
Can anyone recommend where I can get:
1. Layshaft Gear (Cluster gear)
2. Drive Gear (Input Gear)

And how much should I expect to pay?
Thanks,
Bill L

Hi Bill, Give Healey Surgeons or Sports & Classics a call in MD they may be able to help you. As to prices it could go as high as $1000.0 but I think you can get away for about $ 700.00. Maybe a five speed conversion would interest you?--Fwiw--Keoke

keoke, just finishing up my trans. rebuild, o.k. i went a little nuts but i put all n.o.s. back in the box, if one could find a very good used laygear, you should expect to pay $400.00 - $600.00 for that alone, got mine n.o.s., front side brass thrust washer alone is $56.00 back side brass washer $34.00, i found a n.o.s. first gear sliding hub $565.00, beware of the dreaded "repros" for these things! all these original bits are vanishing at an astounding rate, some of the used stuff on eBay looks good but ya dont know till ya have it in hand. what about bearings?/syncros?,forks? they up to snuff? my thinking on this one is to inspect very closely and replace anything that one suspects may become a problem, the trans is only as good as its weakest link, nah sorry to say it but he aint gonna get away with $700.00 bucks for this job. :no nod:

Well OK 7777's, But I think all he said he needs is an input shaft and a Lay Gear. Current rebuilt lay gears are ok as the new gear is now splined on and TIG welded as opposed to just being TIG welded on when they first appeared on the market. Consequently, they would shear off under heavy load. So I figured somplace between 700-to-1000 bucks would put him back in business.---Keoke--AZ- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cowboy.gif

keoke, i understand were ya be coming from, and yes neither of us have actually seen this particular "cement mixer" but Ive never seen a need for a lay gear replacement without additional collateral damage, i.e. didnt think id need front and rear copper/brass thrust washers or the steal ones till i put a mic. on em, or a new sliding hub till i found deep ridges on the splines, and ya must admit its a p.i.t.a. to pull the trans again. i guess im suggesting he closely inspect all the components and not just change the laygear cuz he can easily see its got some teeth chipped or missing. "something" else went wrong along with this. in addition i went to our "mutual friend" for some parts that he explained were in good usable condition, when i went to pick them up they were in worse shape then what i pulled out, and what i took out was "bad". perhaps that speaks of how rare this stuff is becoming. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

Yes, I have been able to locate all parts except the Drive Gear and Cluster Gear.

I will call Healy Surgeons per Keoke's recommendation.

I have also emailed Cape International and Denis Welsh.

Welsh asked for the serial numbers off my old gears and both said the Drive Gear would be used. The Welsh quote for both gears was $773.00.

The kicker for me is that this is my second Cluster Gear. The current gear is reconditioned - the smaller gear end was welded on. The teeth have been severely worn down. The current tranny shop says the metal was not hard enough.

It's all pretty frustrating - I have had tranny problems for 2 years now, and the first shop was never able to fix it. Looks like I will be paying twice!

By the way who is Bill Boulton and how do I contact him.

Thanks everyone,
Bill

Oh Bill, he is just an ole boy up in Oregon that has been playing with Healeys for a long time and has a very good inventory of parts. He is good at it too. So you can contact him at; tricarb@aol.com---------------------Keoke-AZ- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cowboy.gif

P.S. You probably need a First/Reverse gear too.

frankly speaking, I'd just send the whole lug to Bill Bolton in Oregan and have him rebuild it - he'll do you right and not overcharge.

I have already replaced 1st twice! the last 1st gear came from Welsh and it is OK. This has been an expensive lesson for me (~$1200). This is the 4th time I have pulled this tranny in 2 years. The shop I was using focused on british tranny's only. Unfortunately he has been unable to fix it. I don't believe I have any recourse with this guy.

Now I am using a different shop - they are local, very good reputation, but they do all kinds of cars and trucks - not specialists in british cars. They showed me the Cluster Gear and the Drive gear - both look bad, especially the Cluster.
I suspect I will end up spending another $1200...don't you just love these Healey's...
Bill
