TR4/4A Where can I get an A-type TR4A Trans rebuilt in SE Michigan?

Per the title- can anyone here recommend a transmission shop that can do a rebuild of an A-type Overdrive TR4A transmission? The closest place I've found that definitely does Triumph transmissions is in Medina Ohio, about 3 hours away. I'd love to find someplace closer. My OD never worked since I've owned the car despite full electrical replacement and servo adjustment, so I suppose it could be fairly extensive. 1st gear is growling too.

I know of a local club member that has rebuilt TR A type overdrive for $1000, in Nebraska, let me know if you are interested, Greg

Go to Macy's Garage in Dayton, OH. It's in your back yard. Others would love to be as close for such expert work. His website even shows shipping a tranny. Give Mark a call.

I've done a few ,enough to know that you don't want anybody learning on yours. I'd stay away from anybody but a TR or Healey specialist. They'll know how to properly take it apart and make it work right.

Second vote for Macy's Garage. In fact my beloved TR2 is there, as I type, for brake work. Waiting for the next sunny day so that I may drive it back home. First time that car has been out of my sight in twelve years!

Thanks for the info guys -- I emailed Mark Macy at Macy's Garage for a quick sight-unseen quote. To be fair I think he is assuming that there is nothing good inside my gearbox housing... or at least that is what his quote sounds like.

What have some of you paid to have the gearbox and OD rebuilt? I'm going through a bit of sticker shock here, and considering doing it myself but gearboxes scare me.

Try Brian Sims at Manx Motors in Auburn Hills.

I don't think I saw any one mentioning John Esposito: Quantumechanics

The prices he shows are for a unit with a 4-speed core or outright, but he may be able to quote an exchange price for an A-Type unit or possibly rebuild yours.

Sight-unseen quotes (like you say you got from Mark M) should be pessimistic -- an optimistic quote that isn't binding might only serve to mislead you.

IMO - this is not an area where I would price shop. Not saying you shouldn't do it yourself - but if you hire it out it may be worth your while to pay for the best.

Not a lot of parts involved in an o/d rebuild, but they MUST be good ones (not Chinese) and installed by someone who really knows what they are doing. Another vote for Mark Macy...he can rebuild one in his sleep, and it will be RIGHT. No re-dos down the road.
