when to rebuild rear hubs

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on when the rear hubs should be rebuilt. The car has 75000 miles and it and its a 73 TR6. I think I am hearing a clunk out of the drivers side but its hard to determine. The u-joints were replaced about 500 miles ago so I don't think its that. Also checked the differential mounts and they look ok. I put the car up on jack stand and of course it doesn't make the moise when I release the clutch. I just figured that see how the car is 33 years old that the bearings must be running low on grease but its just a swag on my part. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Hard to tell how much abuse your car has had over it's young life. Most people seem to say that a stock rear end on the TR6 is good for 100K miles. If you don't mind the expense (of course you do!), be prepared to shell out a bit. TRF redid my diff (had 110K on it when I bought it. The engine was completely worn out but the diff had a little life left in her. Mine is a 73 also. At least you will get a drain plug added to the bottom, but I don't know anyone that has ever drained their diff and changed the lubricant as a scheduled maintenance.

Jerry: One quick check is to grab the top of the rear wheel and shake it in and out. If you detect any play then you need to investigate further.
I replaced all the u-joints, installed rebuilt hubs, installed new diff mounts, including boxing the frame, and there is still a clunk. The axle slip joints exhibit a little play, but most of the play back there is from the 38 year old differential. From what I have read the diff will function just fine for a long time that way. And will be annoying for that long too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif

Do you hear them making noise? I just did mine a few weeks back, they were singing like crazy all last season. Heard a few horror stories of guys being passed by their own rear wheel and decided enough was enough. You'll know it if you hear that noise, nothing sounds quite like a wheel bearing gone bad IMO, a nice low deep WAHWAHWAH. However I've seen some where they were bad and didn't make any noise at all until the wheel almost fell off, strange. Do as Andy suggests and check for play.
