My Wife's 2002 Mazda Protege was hit by a drunk driver
about a year ago,& repaired.It was hit again a few months
ago by a "bad boy" (according to our Grandaughter).
My Wife fell asleep (briefly) on the way back from
a one day business trip to Napa,& back.The car has damage
on the passenger side.She doesen't want to turn it in to
the insurance company,as I had a mishap last week (while-
- backing up the Dodge Dakota).
I would like to get rid of it,& get another car - but
what? We don't have any spare money right now,but I'd like
her to get a nice car for a fair price.
Any suggestions on what to buy?I'm thinking about a 4-
-door,automatic,ps,etc,etc car.

Doug, if the damage isn't too bad it may be more cost-effective to repair the car and then sell it. Tough call, depends on the retail value of the car, etc.

But of course you already know that.

How much money do you want to spend? I'd say go for a car that gets really good gas mileage, if it's going to be a commuter.

Nice used Honda, Toyota? Can't go wrong with them . . .
 
Hello Doug.

You can't go wrong with a 4 cylinder camry. Even ones that look high milage are OK, as long as there are records... The engines are non interference if the belt breaks. Toyota factory parts are as cheap as aftermarket. I have developed a grudging respect for them, but man, they are SUCH appliances.
 
The car (2002 Mazda Protege)has been in
2 accidents before this.Last repair bill was
for $5100.I would like to get rid of it,& start
over.My Wife's thinking about it.
Her requirments are:

4 door/wagon,as good or better fuel milage (32 Hwy),
2002 or newer,prefers an automatic trans,& has to have
at least the same amount of space inside.
Any suggestions?It should also be low maintenence,
& reliable.I'd like to see her get a Jetta TDI,but not
too sure about the cost to keep it running.We'll probably
need to finance it also,so that opens another can of worms.

Take a look at used Subaru Outback and Foresters. Most owners are repeat owners and they really seem to keep their value. My neighbor keeps his for two to three years, sells it, and gets another year-old model.
