Wheel recommendations

This could save me a ton of searching so I'll ask for the help. I'm considering getting new wheels for my TR6. I'm not ruling out wires, but would like to see the alternatives, especially if anyone has pictures.

I have brand new tires, that I plan to keep (205/70X15 Goodyear Assurance) and I'd like to see what others have and how they look.

Thanks in advance,

Paul,
I have KN Minators. They are one of the Minilite look-a-likes. Superlite is another brand of Minilite look-a-likes. Both of these are available in 15X6. Superlite has a polished rim like the more expensive Panasport wheel. The KN wheels do not have hardened inserts where the studs pass through. I believe the superlites do. Some people are concerned about the weight of KN or Superlite wheels. I didn't notice a difference between stock steel and KN. Atleast not a difference in performance. They look great. I get compliments all the time.
I haven't had any luck psting pictures in my responses to the forum. I'll send a couple of pictures to your email address.

Thanks Bob. Looking forward to getting the pictures. 15 X6 is perfect for my needs.

Most KN's that I've seen (and I have a set on my 3A) are 15x5.5. 6" may be harder to find. I have also seen a KN with polished rim from a store in the U.K., most are completely powdercoated silver.

The reason that they don't have hardened inserts is that they use a shank style mag lug instead of a tapered lug seat. The lugs for KN are expensive and are also a non-standard size. For my wheels. I drilled out the lug holes to accomodate standard size McGard lug nuts. McGard lugs are lifetime guaranteed against rust and cost much less than the KN lugs.

The KNs not as quite lightweight as the Panasports but look more period IMO. I considered the weight of the tires I purchased also to keep the unsprung weight of the tire/wheel assembly as low as possible.

Standard backspace for a TR6 wheel should be around 3-3/4" to avoid suspension interference. Especially important if you use a tube shock conversion in the rear. You can use 4" but you'd need a spacer to add the clearance.

So Peter, what would you say is recommended spec for offset and wheel bolt pattern? Is it 15 X (5.5-6.0) X 3.75 X 4.50?

My TR6 with 15x6 Super Lites (from Pack Racing) and P215/70R15 P4000 Pirelli tires, and rear tube shooks.

Lowered one inch with GoodParts springs.

NO rubbing at all.

Nice wheels and nice setting to take a picture of a beautiful blue TR6.

Hi Paul,

Our bolt pattern is 4 x 4.5(114.3mm); can't vary that unless you use wheel adapters (don't bother.)

Backspace is most important, 3.75" should pose no clearance problems.

As the width increases, and the backspace remains static, the wheel moves outwards. Too wide and you hit the fenders.
15x6" with a 3.75" backspacing should be about optimal for your car.

hey paul, i have a set of konig wheels which are like the minilight wheels. they are unused and i could use some money if you are interested in them? this would save you on shipping since im right down the road. thanks

Randy,

Any pictures available?

Also, are you going to the Heritage show in Sandwich either tomorrow or Sunday (rain date)?

hey paul, unfortunatly i cant make that show because i am working and now my diff is on the way out. i am gonna try to pull that this weekend and pull it apart to rebuild. i do have a pic at home on my comp which i will post later for you but if i remember it was just the pic that i got from the ad when i bought them. they are nice and i intended them for my project tr6 and i have since bought the driving one i have now which have panasports on them so they are just hanging out in the boxes they came in. i will try to take a pic of them and post that as well and you are more than welcome to inspect them in person. they have a polished lip and silver spokes. 15x7"
thanks
Randy

Post a pic and let me think about it. One potential problem may be that I wanted to stay with a 15 X 6 wheel, due to the 205/70/15 tires. If I had gone to the 215/60/15, the extra inch would be fine, but I wasn't planning to put that size tire on a 5.5" stock wheel at that time.

This is new to me. Would a 15 X 7 fit a lowered (1 inch) 6?
I have 215/65/15 on car now with steel wheels. Could I put these tires on a 7 inch rim? I'm not sure about the formula for what width rim versus tire and getting confused.

Tire Rack has some good tech stuff on tire dimensions and the like. Googling might find better info on the subject.

Some have put 7" wide rims on the TR6 and pronounce no rubbing. I would think under stressful driving that there would be some interference.

I have 15 x 6 Panasports with 205/70 Michelins and enjoy the ride.

The 16" Panasports are 7" wide, and would require a lower profile tire. I think one would have to do his homework to get the right tire/wheel combo here to avoid rubbing, but it is doable.

I made the silly mistake of buying a 205/70 (non-Michelin) to fit on my stock (steel) wheel as a spare. Could barely get it to go into the spare tire well. Couldn't get it out without deflating. Smart, real smart. Finally bought a narrow Vredestein in OE size to solve that problem.

hi paul, like i said this is the ad picture but these are the ones i have. there are others who have put these on their tr6 with the 205/70/15 tires and i have heard no complaints. the only thing that was said about them was one of the ball joint bolts may need to be put in facing the opposite direction so it doesnt rub against the rim. otherwise there isnt supposed to be any issue.
