What was the original color for steel wheels on '63 Tr4s as delivered.
The inside of the steel wheels are painted in some kind of brown primer/paint, but what was the exteriort color?
Body color, white, silver or?

M.

Never body color.

Early 4's were a shade of silver (the redundantly named Honda 'Argent Silver' is a common choice).

Late 4's were painted Spa White (I used Krylon's 'Gloss ivory').

Off hand I do not know the change point though it may come down to your exact commission number if original/correct is important to you.

Of course, if original is not important -- then anything goes:

I had a real good reason for doing that. Festive too.

Thanks Geo!
Mine are currently painted a white/ivory color, so I guess I have one less thing to paint..

I had a '64 that was black with a red interior. The PO had painted the wheels a very pale baby blue. As I write this it sounds horrific- but was beautiful.

There was a a very early 1963 Standard-Triumph Service Bulletin detailing the change from silver to Spa White on wheels "across the Triumph line"; I don't believe any commission number starting points were cited, nor is it all that likely that it would've been documented in Spare Parts Catalogues (I've never seen any evidence to that effect), as it's likely the parts numbers for the wheels didn't change.

When was your TR4 built in 1963? If you have a British Heritage Trust Certificate, it will give the exact date your car was made.

This is the most specific source for the TR4 color change I have found. The Triumph Register of America Judging Guidelines state the change from Silver to Spa White took place in March 1963. If your car was built in January or February then they should be Silver according to the guidelines and if they were built in April or later Spa White would be correct. If your car was built in March 63, who knows which is correct since the TRA guidelines don't get down to a specific day in March.

Vila,
My '63Tr4 was manufactured around the 1963 July-August time frame.
The original, unused (still has the nubs on the tread) Michelin "X" spare is still in the trunk and it is mounted on a Spa White rim.
So it looks like Spa White wheels would be correct.
