What's this dingus

With my latest parts car I got a twin SU manifold and carbs but the manifold doesn't look like the ones I've seen on Spits.

It seems to fit to the head OK but what is the round thing sticking up with the hose outlet? Does anybody have a nice clear picture of the linkage, vacuum and fuel line routing? The carbs are AUD290.

I presume that round thing is a flame trap and that a rubber pipe would originally have fitted between it and the rocker cover (valve cover) to vent fumes from there.

The round dingus with the hose outlet is a PCV valve. The rest I can't help you with.

eejay:

My 1969 TR6, with a TR250 engine block, had one of those
mushroom looking things planted in the intake manifold.
It would pop out while driving and the car would instantly
die and coast to the roadside.

I'm pretty sure it is a PCV and mine ran a hose to my brake
booster, I think. Jeff Palya rebuilt my carbs and intake
manifold and did away with the mushroom thing.

tinster

Edit: Here is a photo of my mushroom:

That's a PVC.Hose goes to oil catch can on timing cover or to the valve cover. does that manifold fit the 1500 engine?
Mike

I put it up to my spare head and it seems to fit perfectly. Do you know what it's from?

Based on Tinster's picture, I'm guessing the mushroom thingy is a repair manual stand. Dale, where are you gonna put your Bentley now that Jeff Palaya removed it??

Not such a clear shot, but best I can do offhand. 68 or 69 Spit, I think.

I think it's the Brit setup for the Spitfire /Midget 1500cc USA got the ZS 150CD, the Brits stayed with the SU's Is it for sale?
Mike

I think Randall nailed it. The English 1500's used HS4's and the manifold doesn't have the PCV valve (mushroom thingy). Those look more like HS2's from how they mount to the manifold. Measure the bore to get a better idea.

I have a set up from a Brit 1500 sitting on the bench right now for comparison.

They are HS2s. I've got HS4s to go on it after they are rebuilt so the manifold is not for sale. I might sell the carbs after the HS4s are ready.

Not sure the HS4s will fit a manifold for the HS2 carb?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure these would be for the Mk3 Spitfire up to, but not including, 1969. The 1969 Federal models had "emission controlled" carburetors, easily distinguished by an additional sort of "L" shaped bracket around the jet that supposedly limited adjustment of the jet in order to maintain proper settings for emissions. It's possible that they're on these carbs and I just can't see them, though.

You really burst my bubble Andrew, I pulled the HS4s off the shelf and they don't fit. The mounting holes are at a 45 degree angle and these are vertical. Oh well I guess these go on the car and the HS4s stay on the shelf for a while. They don't have the emission control bracket though.

That looks exactly like the HS2 set up we installed on Baldrick.

The flat round thing is the PCV valve as others have mentioned. I ran the hose from it into the valve cover vent with a T fitting and an additional hose running to the Evap canister.

For a later, basically stock 1500 it seems to run well now that we have the needles sorted out. I just checked the plugs this evening and they look great - no signs of running rich or lean.
