I got this for Christmas, and I've been meaning to ask. Anyone know what model MG this badge might have come off of? It measures about 3"...

When I first saw the image I thought 'MGA hubcap!' but then read the 3" comment. Not on a hubcap. What's the other side look like? Almost big enough to be a (fuel) filler cap.

I'm lost on this'n.

It is not a badge. It is the emblem found in the center of the MG TD hub caps. On the back should be a 3/8" diameter stud with a small hole for a cotter pin. The recessed section is normally painted red.

I didn't realise they were that big!
 
They're not quite 3" but is you measure from tip to tip on the octagon they're 2 1/2" (2 1/4" across the flats). 3" is a bit of a stretch!

Several early models used MG medallions on the hub caps from the SVW pre-war range up to TD and Y-Type.

You can sort of see them in this photo...

I also thought the were carried thru to the MGA's. Obviously I am mistaken.
 
You could be right. Check the MGA's without wire wheels they may have the same hubcap. As Steve mentioned above they were popular on most solid wheel MG's.
 
MGA did not use the medallions, but they were available as after market items. Also, the caps from YB and TD models may fit, as they are also 15" pressed steel.

I have heard that very early MGAs had medallions but I've never seen this confirmed.
 
The early A's with "disc" wheels had octagon emblems on the caps but they were smaller, IIRC. Nowhere near as large as the one Rob has. Inch to inch and a half, methinks.
 
MGAs came with disc wheels throughout production. The only logo ever carried on the wheel was on the knock-off spinners of wire wheels.
 
Graham Robson's: "The MGA, MGB and MGC" (page 17) may offer a different view... tho actually a TD prototype.
 
My mistake. It's not 3". I was using me noggin' to try and remember how big it is (apparently doesn't work too well after a weekend playing with carpet glue!). It's at the office, and I use it as a paper weight. So, I didn't have it with me when I made the post. It is actually closer to 2.25-2.5". It's very light. There are no studs on the back (broke off at some point in time), but I can see where there use to be one in the center and two semi-circular studs towards the edge.
 
Then it IS a hubcap center. Tho as Steve points out, not from a production MGA. I wuz half right. Not a new thing. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif
