whats the wheel color?

Boy am I'm at my wits end trying to find the right color of paint to repaint my wheels. Can somebody guide me in the right direction here? The forecast was rain here till the weekend so I thought I'd pop the wheels off, sand them down and repaint them. I'm not going for a showroom finish, just wanted to grab a can of spray paint and hit them. I've tried aluminum, silver and "smoke" gray. The first 2 was way too metallic and the gray was too dark. Has anybody got anything close to original color and what did they used. This is a 75 Tr6.....thanks. The weekend suppose to be a nice one..... gotta git-ur-dun

Moss Motors sells a Super Nice Satin Silver spray paint in a can: Its not the least costliest but It really comes out Great: Cost is approx. $15.00 + or - for a can:

I`ve used it on wire wheels on a TR3: Disc wheels on a TR4 etc etc: A couple of light coats and your wheels "Gleam":

The PO of my car painted the rims what he said was "gunmetal gray". I don't know if that was a standard color or not. Looks unique to me based on what else I've seen. I don't know how it would compare to "smoke" gray.

Dupli-color sold at most every auto parts sells a nice silver shoen on my wheels. I kinda remember they sold 2 shades and this was the lighter one.

I will be picking up my wheels from the powdercoater this afternoon.
I went for a Dulux bright silver just out of preference. I didn't like the aluminium or satin silvers, too grey for me.
I'll take some pics over the weekend and post them.

Whew.. the "Delux Bright Silver" is what they call 10-foot-chrome isen't it? (from 10 feet away it looks like chrome)

As for matching the original, I agree with the Duplicolor idea.
Most parts stores and even Wal-Mart carries small cans of Duplicolor. Usually there are several shades of silver and grey, as they are meant to be used to match body colors.
 
The best way to eliminate that rust is sandblasting followed up with a good grease/wax remover found at any automotive paint supplier.
If you don't have access to a sandblaster, sand the rust away and then apply Extend, by Loctite. This will convert the rust to a paintable surface. Follow the instructions. Use the grease/wax remover prior to paint.
Scuff all surfaces with a Scotchbrite pad or something equivalent. Follow up with a tack cloth prior to the grease/wax remover. Use a primer.
Sanding alone will not remove all of the rust. It will eventually bleed back through.
 
It is actually a Ford color, Argon Silver or something. I have a can I never used. On second thought I did use it to spray a 4X4 piece of metal that my powder coater gives out to match colors. I then brought them in and had them PC'd. Of course this was after I had them all trued.

no, not a chrome look but a metallic silver. Not what Floyd was looking for though.

Wow.....thanks for the replies. I did stop at Walmart and saw the Dupli line. Just wasn't to sure about those either. I will go back and take another look. Guess i should of came here first and I would probably had them done by the weekend. That's life........Thanks again
 
For my wire wheels I spent 2 days in front of the tv using steel wool. Then dupli color ceramic caliper gray and am very happy with the results.

that gunmetal gray did enter my mind as I was searching.....
 
Well I made my stops to the local stores on my way home tonite....again. Many had the Dupli line of paint but not a one had the argent silver. I'm soooo confused. I just like the orginal color cause it wasn't real metallic and shiny. I was hoping to find something off the shelf without having to order it. I appreciate all the input. There was a auto paint store years ago downtown I just thought about. I'll try them in the morning. Thanks again to all.....
 
Ford Argent is the correct color - #D7AZ-19000-A. A local dealership should have it.

Also, Eastwood used to sell the exact color for TR's. The original part #1285Z is gone, replaced by Argent 10076. I am sure it's a perfect replacement.

Then there's Moss who sells #220-560.

I've used all of these for wheels, valve covers, and air cleaners and they are perfect.
 
I've decided to try the Dupli High Performance Wheel Coating. But now I'm at another stand still and maybe someone can answer this question for me. I went ahead and took my wheels down to bare metal. I was getting too many coats of paint on them from all those colors that weren't working for me. Now that I got what I think might work I am confused because the can just talks about cleaning your old wheel by removing loose paint, etc.....but it doesn't mention anything about appling primer to bare metal. I went to there website and can't find any mention there. And of course they are closed today. Any thoughts....
 
i used the same stuff on my wheels and they say to use their self etching primer when taking down to bare metal. as far as finding a can of it, good luck. i bought my silver at walmart and could barely find enough of that. looked all over at auto stores and never found any more duplicolor. that walmart still hasn't restocked after i took all their silver either.

let me try to find the duplicolor information...
