What's the purpose of the dust cap?

I know this sounds like a "Who is buried in Grant's tomb" type of question, but.... Does the dust cap that covers the front hub nut just sit there to keep out dust? Or, do you pack the cup with grease before putting it in? The previous owner seemed to have it packed with grease. Jim
 
Do not pack the dust cap with grease. It's purpose it to keep dirt off the bearings, not to push grease against them.
 
Ummm......always wipe the inside of the cap with a thin smear of grease. Do NOT put it on clean....or you will end up with a very rusty cap and possibly rust flakes in your bearings.
That said, my particular LBC has grease zerks on the front hubs....accessible just by pulling off the hub caps......and the dust cover has a vent hole dead centre. Allows you to pump in 5 or so strokes on a grease gun and not blow the seal out....yet, one would imagine, in 50'000 miles of doing that, one would end up with a dust cover full of grease.
 
He said they are ont the hub, not the cap. He also spoke about the hole in the cap that'll keep you from blowing out the seal. Thus, the hole is still open. At least that's what I read.
 
Nope. Factory equipped on MK2 Jags. Sit proud at about a 45 degree angle, just outboard of the mounted disc wheel inner ring. And a vent hole (factory) in the dust cap.
 
That said, I don't think it was a brilliant idea. If you put a zerk there, mechanics (and owners) are going to use it, and NOT do a proper clean/inspect/repack of the wheel bearings periodically. I had to chisel and dig out bearing grease that was turning back into dinosaurs when I went through mine.
Now, on the rear axle bearings, good idea.....rather difficult to pull them out....but, I had to dig off an inch of carp 9sp) completely covering them to just find them.
Like I said, My particular LBC.
