Not that any of you really care...

Some of you may remember me as the young kid who likes to play with British sports cars from a few years ago. The good news is, I still do. I've been away for various reasons, so I'll update all of you on my current state, just because it may amuse you...

I went off to college in fall 2007, to pursue a degree at a state college. Because I did well in high school and on the ACT, I was placed into the Honors Program, which paid for my tuition, but not room and board. During the spring semester I got mono and missed a lot of class, and ended up having to forfeit my scholarship.

The following fall, I began attending community college, and discovered several things that interested me, from a career standpoint. I started studying audio production, and started getting work as a freelance voice actor. I got a gig from three manufacturers of radio controlled cars, who had a display set up at this year's Long Beach Grand Prix. Nearly half a million people heard my voice! I felt like I was on top of the world.

I was doing well until this past spring, when I discovered that my girlfriend of four years was cheating on me with an older co-worker. The same day, my identity was stolen. I was heartbroken and depressed. I didn't drive either of the LBCs this year at all. When I get depressed, spend money. I sold my Mustang, gave away the Jeep, and bought an Oldsmobile Cutlass I had been looking at for a while (the ex hated this thing). I bought a purebred Siamese kitten. I rediscovered my long-latent love of baseball and went to a ton of games with my father. I worked harder than ever on my music. I went out a lot and dated a ton of girls. Still depressed, I started smoking.

As time went on I realized that I had done the right thing by getting this albatross off of my neck. Then, another string of bad luck went my way. I got in a car accident on the way to pick my parents up from the airport. My student loans were pulled a week after classes started. Worst of all, my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I began throwing myself into my schoolwork and a career, trying to cope with everything. Finally, things have began sorting themselves out. my student loans were re-instated. My father got a surgery date. I just opened up my own detailing shop.

Now that you know how I got here, know that I intend to stay even longer this time. I have a lot of stuff to do...I still need to get Tony Barnhill back for the Midget brake parts he sent, and I just picked up a Jaguar IRS for my MGB. Next year will hopefully be a great year for me, as I continue to reconnect with what's important. If you made it this far, thanks for reading...

I'm very happy to see you back here. It sounds like you've had your share over the past months. Keep the positive attitude. I hope all goes well with your dad's surgery. Fwiw, prostate cancer is a pretty common thing with older guys and most get through it just fine. It's not fun, but you can live & thrive with it or in spite of it.

Glad you are back, buddym & that things are turning around for you....don't worry about me until you're square on your feet.

Wow! and i thought my situation was gettin bad, not even close.

Welcome Back

I appreciate the support guys. I know this place is a sanctuary for many of you, so I didn't want to bog anybody down while all of this was happening. Now that things are looking up, I'm glad to be back.

Feel free to "bog us down" anytime -- that's what friends are for, and this is one of the safest places on the old interwebs to do it.

Very sorry to hear of the trials and tribulations, and equally glad that you seem to be on the good side of them.

Son......welcome to a thing called life.....

Dad use to say, "Life is like a s--t sandwich...the more you eat, the sh--ier it tastes...."

Dad's not an optimistic fellow to say the least.

If it's any consolation, I went through far more over a longer perod of time and I'm here to tell ya.......

IT's GONNA GET BETTER !!!!! (It might get worse in the mean time though)

Rest assured, if you're not comming out of a crisis....you're heading into one.

...so just relax, this too shall pass....

Anyway, I didn't know you before, but glad to see you're back.

For what it's worth, if things get to you too badly and you need someone who can relate, PM me or email me direct.

....I'm, always here....wether I want to be or not....

Lemme share what I know about the detail world, you may already have knowledge of this:

Used car dealers/wholesales should be a bulk of your business, if not, GET SOME !!! You'll have steady work.

They WILL NOT pay retail price. Don't think you'll get $100 or more a pop from them, it aint happening. Current price here for wholesale is $60-75 a unit, more for worse cars and large vehicles. Feel them out and see what they are paying. The guy I use charges me $60 and has 30 years of experience and is a MASTER ARTIST !!!!! It ALWAYS amazes me what he can do...and I've used him for over ten years.

CARS MUST BE PERFECT, dooor jams, trunks, engine compartments, ash trays and all. Spray paint stubborn carpet stains and fender wells and frames that can be seen on cars and especially trucks. This does wonders.

Used newspaper is the BEST thing for cleaning windows, also the cheapest, don't buy paper towels.

Undercut your competions by 25% or so. These guys have established relationships and don't like change, but they are tight cheap bastards and will throw you a bone if the price is right and the work is good.

Make up flyers and go see these people. Drive something you cleaned so they can see what you can do.

Watch washing engines, have an air compressor on hand. Water gets down in the plug holes and causes misfires on allot of new cars, be prepared for this. Might want to have a cheap scanner on hand to erase check engine ,lights when this happens.......and it will.

You can clear coat plastic headlights to help them look better if you don't have a restoration kit. They charge more for the restoration service here. If you just give a quick THIN coat of clear w/o charging more, you might get more work.

That's all I can think of off hand right now. Hope this helps.

Good luck!!!

My shop is at a dealer, so no worries there. My first detailing gig involved prepping cars that sold for six figures at Barret-Jackson, so I am well aware of what "perfection" entails. Most local detailers, however, do not. I have a small clientèle that are willing to pay my price for my services, and I intend to keep it a small operation. School is my primary focus now, and with my current setup, I make my own hours.

Good for you.Somtimes these things make you stronger.
I don't know what I'd do if my Wife left me (not that I don't-
deserve it).
I wish you well.

You visited us here in So Cal and didn't even let us know? For shame! Glad to see you around, and I'm sure things will pick back up as they always do. Life has a way of reacting positively to those who refuse to be negative.

Did you go to the Long Beach Grand Prix? My voice was indeed there...and apparently the president of Tamiya was as well!

Welcome back Camshaft! What a pleasant surprise! It's super to hear that the sun is starting to shine on you again. You've been through a lot, but your showing a massive amount of inter strength by working your way through it. Good luck and stay in touch with us.

Sounds like you're set, great!!! Totally different world from B-J to your local dealer junk. B-J cars haven't been repo'd and aren't filled with crap and have 10 years worth of dead paint. Sounds like you don't have to worry about that and you are definatly in the right spot. You couldn't be in a better place. You're alot better off with the higher clientele anyway. Less work, more money!!!!

It's really hard to find folks down here that will spend the $$$ for a good detail, not to mention conditions here don't contribute to that anyway. The roads are really dirty and a detail doesn't last long. One trip in a clean unit and I have to send it back through again. It really starts cutting into my bottom line.

Just looked at your pics and the last one I had for fours years that put me through the mill was named Jenny too (but with a Y obviously). I went through 9 IN A ROW with that name!!!!

Like I said before, I can relate my brutha.....OH CAN I RELATE !!!!!

Try a Kelly, they usually go a bit smoother. (although I've burnt a few of those up too.)

Better yet, just spend time with your cars !!!!

Wow, Cam! Welcome back! Pleased to hear from ya. Keep pluggin' at it, remember: wot don't kill ya just makes ya stronger.

And don't be a stranger here.

...how th' heck ya gonna stuff that IRS thingie under th' B?!?! Gonna be a ton of slice-n-dice!

Cam:

Very good to hear from you.
I'm glad you're weathering the storms well.
This is a good place to vent, as everyone is a friend.
If you decide to go on a road trip, cross over to the north shore and visit me.
And I want to see pics of the IRS in the "B"

:winner1: Hang tough Man!

:iagree: With the above posts. Welcome Back! I've been around for a while and can say with certainty that life is to be lived no matter what. Been down and been up but mostly am delighted to be living. Each day I get out of bed I am quick to thank the Lord for letting me have another day and even quicker to say "And please don't let me mess it up too badly."

Life, Laugh and yes, love!

I haven't been to the LBGP in ten years. It's become too much of a zoo.

How do you tell the regular zoo from the LBGP zoo?
