What's lurking behind the wings

With the undercoat and paint removed, look what is there. That red stuff is rust with original primer adhered to it. So now comes the sand blasting.

The areas with no rust were undercoated.

One vote for undercoating, some might say. My wings were dealer undercoated inside and there is no rust. That particular area with the rust on your wing is so prone to collect water and mud from tire sling. I keep this area coated with a nice thin layer of Waxoyl, even though it has undercoat. Just me.
 
I will be sand blasting all the rusted areas, including the small spider web rust spots, but not the whole thing. Then treat with phosphoric acid, clean and coat with epoxy primer. Bill, on my car, the wing was not completely covered with undercoating. This is what it looked like.

 
The rusty area looks like it doesn't need more than a light flashing.

Yep, I am not unhappy, no holes. A little time in the backyard blowing sand around and it's done. I just wanted to show the difference in where the undercoat was and wasn't. The left side has a rusted out spot around the side light that will be more of a PITA.
 
While I had my right rear off, I scraped away all the undercoating. What I found was a two edged sword. Where it covered properly, everything was all right underneath. Other places, mainly due it appears, to being applied after assembly the undercoating trapped water and dirt and held it against the metal causing rust and pinholes.
After sandblasting, I painted the entire inner surface and the portion that is the faying surface to the body tub with POR 15. To protect it from rock chips I painted over that with clear product used on lower rocker panels.
Maybe this was over kill, but it gives me peace of mind, as I drive all year in the Northwest, which is not the driest place in the country.
I also spray the tire sling area with LPS 3 which is easy to use for touching up.
