What's it worth

Hello all, it's been several years since I've posted on here. I do check in from time to time to see how my old friends are doing but mostly just lurk about once every couple of months. I'm still driving my 76 Midget around, just about every day. I've done pretty well keeping her running as a daily driver. At any rate, I've a chance to purchase a 74 from a co-worker who is retiring. I like the RWA chrome bumper cars a little more than my 76. I was hoping to get some advice on what you guys think it might be worth. Here are the details, he was having a problem with the dual SU's so he put a Weber downdraft on 4 years ago and never started it back up. He still has the original SU's. He has pulled the rear brake lines off due to some cracking and the car has sit on rear jack stands, flat front tires in his garage for the past 4 years. The 1275 isn't locked up, it rotates by had. The interior is a wreck, usual 37 year old car problems. Dash is severly cracked, no steering shaft cowl. Wires that would make a better birds nest than car electrical hanging down from everywhere. The real show stopper is the body, I can see rust bubbles in the A pillars, at the bottom of the fenders, and on the leading edge of the hood. The boot lid has rust on the edge where a luggage rack is bolted and the rear quarters and back valance appears to be made of 1" bondo with krylon white over it. I can handle the body work, wasn't wanting to but can do it. He thinks it's worth about 1500 dollars as it sits. I think it's worth around 500, what do you guys think? Sorry for the long post, just wanted to paint an accurate description.
Thanks,
JC

Not running, no brakes, rust and heavy bondo, interior trashed.......have him get it running and stopping and tell him you'll discuss higher than $500.
It's a pig in a poke. You have no idea if it runs or not...or knocks like heck, or whatever.
Synchros?
Rear end howl?
Wheels bent?
Track straight?
Clutch shot?
Radiator rotted?
$500 and it's your problem, you can deal with it, but for $1500, it's his problem to prove it's worth it.

Just MHO.

I agree. Thats what I paid for my Midget. Thats why I call it my $500.00 Midget. Mine atleast had a rust free body. But once I got it running found out the recent rebuild was a shade tree job and pistons ate up the cylinder walls. then the wiring. I riped the old out and started all over. The brakes brakes are still needing attention etc...if I didn't have spare motors and a parts cars..................

I agree...with the amount of work ahead of you, and it sounds like everything, $500 would be generous. As stated if it was running and stopping it might be worth a little more. I've seen much better deals in GA as of late and a lot more throughout the SE. Good luck, Rut

I think everyone is pretty close on the price...

$200-$300 as a parts car sounds like to me. UNless you like working on junk, I'd buy a better car running.

Wait, you have one already.

A running driving RB beats a rusted out, torn up and doesn't run CB ANY day of the week....especially in the spring.

:iagree:

If ya want a RWA car, look for one worth the purchase price. That'n sounds like a donor fer certain. He's in negative numbers (ie: he should pay YOU to tow it off) IMO!

I bought a car just like that. A '73 RWA. Paid $250 for it. It's a donor for my A35 race sedan, but I might slap it together as a sort of rat rod later on. The 1275 in it ran good and was low mileage, but I rebuilt it anyway.

Thanks everyone for confirming what I already knew. My 76 is dressed up as a chrome bumper anyway. Just about time to change the thrust washers in the 1500 again. I'll keep my eyes open for a RWA that has a little more to offer.
Great to talk to you guys again,
JC
