What's in a name?

I refer to my car as "mine" and my room mate's cars as "yers", "his", or "hers" depending on which one I'm talking to. Occassionally, I'll preface "mine" with an explicative, like this weekend... The PO called my B "Betty-Sue" if i recall correctly, because there was relatively popular song that came out the same model year as my car that went by that name. Well, maybe it wasn't "Betty-Sue" but it was certianly one of those songs about a girl and named the girl's name from '76.

I'm inclined to name my car after a lady that I fancy, but she's a red and my car isn't... hmmmmmm... maybe after a paint job or....

Nunyas, How about "Peggy-Sue": "If you knew PeggySue"----------Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I just haven't been able to call our "B" by anything other than "The B". I had a thought of naming "her" Ellie (a take off on my wife's name), and I even had a thought to have "Ellie" painted in script somewhere. Then better sense got a hold of me. Hence she's still "The B" My first MGB, back in the late 70's was called "Black Beauty" and that stuck to this day although I don't own the car any longer.

The Seattle PI has a weekly feature in the paper called "I love my car because..." and wanted a name for my car when they featured it on their web site in December so, as it is bright yellow, it (she) became Goldie.

Glad to hear she's not a lemmon... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Hmmm? You mean ike Bert of ā€œBert & Ernieā€ fame? Your girl friend thinks your MG looks like a Muppet? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

alas, but I didn't know Peggy-Sue... I was but a wee li'le lad in '76 and my ears were deaf to the sounds of music. The only things that I can recall with any clarity from that year are playing in a corn field, learning to ride a two wheeler, a big fire, and moving to FL. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There are very few truly feminine cars. They have to be both seductive & dangerous. The Sirens sing to you when you drive. You forget you are mortal.

I named my '79 B several months ago but just got it day before yesterday. He's yellow so a friend immmediately suggested Woodstock, Snoopy's little yellow friend. Sounded good to me.

Indeed, but the Dino 246 GT would be one of them.
What an absolute stunner! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The real femme fatale cars were produced in the mid to late 50's and were primarily race cars.

58 Ferrari 412 MI Scaglietti Spyder
57 FerrariTesta Rossa 500 MD Scaglietti
55-58 Jaguar D-Type
58 Scarab
59 OSCA Spyder
59 LOLA Mk I
59 Elva Courier Mk I&II (severely biased opinion)
58 Devin Special
63 Ginetta G-4

I have to say that although the Dino is quite stunning, the race version (spyder) is the real dominatrix of the 246 line. Just as the XKSS is to the D-type. Besides, coups seem to appear more masculine.

Bret, I have not named any of my British cars so I have nothing to contribute directly. I think your analysis of the male vrs. female as in Russian vrs. American/British navy is very amusing and astute. Great contribution!!

My '74 B convertible is named "Lucy II" since my first MGB (a '65) was dubbed "Screamin' Lucy" by my then-roommate. The reasons for that name are lost to history and alcohol but I always liked the name so it was passed on.

I don't have my B yet, I own it, but it is about two hours away. I have however been trying to come up with a name. I like naming my cars female names that I just like, and try to avoid giving them names of people I know, so people don't think I named it after them. SO, here we go:
my '79 B will be named Anabelle
my '70 Pontiac GTO is Shawna
my '00 Pontiac Grand Prix is Amy
my '97 Pontiac Grand Prix (which I don't have any more) was named Julia, and I called her Jules for short (kind of like in the wedding singer with Julia Gulia, but I though Jules was a cool nick name).

So that is my cars names. I will continue to name future vehicles as well.

As for not being one to talk to inanimate objects that can't hold an intelligent conversation, I have no idea where you are coming from. What do you say when things ☼☼☼☼ you off? Like even when your TV stops working, or your computer freezes up, or you get frustrated working under the hood? I say stuff like "darn, piece of crap computer. Why won't you work right? Come on, please?!? I just want you work so I can check my email already. What the heck is your problem?" and it can go on like that. I'm sure most people here have at some point in their life done something similar, and if you haven't, well, no offense, but you're wierd. (not always a bad thing though)

I'm done.

I named our 1974 MGB as Gayle K. Kay is my wife's middle name. She is the one that found the car on Ebay and she is the one that won the bid. How can I be so lucky to have a wife buy a completely restored MGB?
