What's in a name?

I thought it would be fun and interesting to see what names our forum members have given their MGs and why?

My 74B is named “Bertie Wooster” after the rich playboy character created by P. G. Wodehouse. I drive “Bertie” for fun and for leisurely activities. Our workhorse vehicle, a Toyota Van, is named “Jeeves” after Bertie’s valet!

So, what’s your MG’s name? Do you have a picture you can post?

Dom.

My MGB Roadster is called "The Flying Raisin". It was named when my sisters and I were young and the car belonged to my father. In those days, it was just some old car so it was in fairly poor shape with lots of dents. Our reasoning was that the car was small, black and wrinkled like a raisin and it was really fast (and it was compared to most cars from the 70's). Thus, The Flying Raisin.

I own two other MGs as well but only the MGA has a name. One of our friend's kids said it looked like the car from Stuart Little, so now and then we call it Stuart.

While my wife and I were towing her home, she came up with Clementine, which is a small orange sweet fruit. When I was replacing the carpet, I found a heart shaped pendant on a chain under the console inscribed with "Dolly"...she has be dubbed "Dolly Clementine" ever since...DC for short /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My Silverado is Laverne (that is what it says on the nerf bars)

My Chrysler LHS is know far and wide as "Christine"...don't ask! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

My 79.. May She Rest in Piece.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif was Margret Josophine- Midge for short or Potato Chip ....depended on my mood for the moment

my 75 is named Mouse, cuz when i get HER Home, and opened the hood there was a big fat old Field Mouse sitting on the alternator.

My A is caled "The Next Ten Years" ....she has not really earned Her name yet.

And all cars are Female

Aloha All,

Since this is the MG forum I voted female, however my Triumph is male.

My MG is called "the Red Flash". She is red in color, has flowing lines and is a bit more refined than her older cousins with more shiny chrome jewelry which combine to give her classic elegance. She's not a muscle car, but is nimble and agile with good acceleration but not fast (top end is about 65-70 MPH) with the strength to run all day. She turns heads as she goes by.

My red TR3 is called "The Red Shark" and is a male. He has an muscular appearance with a wide grin and powerful engine. He can sprint out of the way of trucks and cars on the highway with excellent fleetness of tires. He has a deep voice compared to my MG and does not have as much shiny chrome trim. His body is not a curvy as the MG.

Safety Fast,
Dave

I answered "don't know"... name a car? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Mine is a female, of course and named Sam Car. She's too cute to be a male car but I figured since guys name their cars girl names, I should give my car a guy name. Hence the name Sam. I was sixteen when I got the car. It was my first car. Maybe I put too much into naming her but it stuck. My dad has always called it my little cockroach since he was the one always working on it. He doesn't seem to think she is as wonderful as I do. I just can't understand why.

My first MG a Pageant Blue BGT was affectionately referred to as 'The Blue Bopper' by my girlfriend of the time.

My new B Roadster goes by the name of 'Fawkes', as in the Phoenix from Harry Potter. Basically it needs a shed load of work to get it running again, but it will one day rise like the phoenix (next summer with a bit of luck!)

Hey Dave,

Interesting choice in wording. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Triumph’s – Masculine?
MG’s – Feminine?

Kind’a amuses me when I thought about it. Only because the Russian (Soviet) Navy prefers to refer to their ships as Male. While western navies, such as the US Navy and the Royal Navy refer to their ships as Female. Most intriguing, as most of the Russian ships are decapitated “emasculated” rusting hulks barely making it out of port these days, while western ships rule the seas.

The good news is most Triumph owners I know would never let that happen to their vehicles – regardless of the gender.

Anyway, I’ve actually only given real names about half of my cars over the years. Usually female & none-gender specific in nature. However I’ve always referred to all of my vehicles using feminine personifications - “She or her”.

I think people generally refer to machines as female when it's something sleek, smooth, gentle, pretty, etc. Something they want to treat well. The male machines are the ones that offer brute force, bravery, etc. Perhaps that's why I'm one of the few here who views my B as "male". I drive that car like I stole it - always have and always will. It takes a hard beating and keeps coming back for more (although sometimes reluctantly!). My other cars don't really give me an impression of gender other than by looks, which to me says either way for the MGA and male for the YB. (see my sig for the cars)

Guess I am just cold hearted. Imagining that inanimate objects have living attributes is just plain strange. Assigning personal names to cars is ?

I figure when you spend 20 years getting to know something intimately, it is easy to become attached emotionally. It's a similar phenomenon to the feeling you get when selling a house you've lived in for a long time, or more accurately a car you've had for years. In a sense, I suppose the feeling we get is caused by the car being an extension of ourselves. Our cars didn't choose us, we chose them and did so for a reason. Letting go is like losing a part of ourselves, and having them in our posession gives a sense of completeness. Maybe I'm just soft-hearted but I am quite fond of my car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't talk to "things" that can't carry on an intelligent conversation or at least give some response. In my mind this is even worse than "trying to teach a pig to sing". At least the pig may give "some" response.

I've never named a car in my life. My sister has named every vehicle she's owned, but hasn't named the MGB yet. Dad tends to refer to the various cars in our driveway by color, as in "someone needs to move the blue car. I'm trying to get the green one out, and I gotta move the silver one, which is blocked in by the blue one". This refers to, in order, Sister's Jeep Grand Cherokee, the B, His Own Civic, and the Jeep again.

I am the same as Jeff. Most of our cars are described by color. (and also like Jeff, a colorful adjective may be added to the name if said vehicle is giving trouble).

I did rehab a dreadful, rusting Spridget for one of my brothers recently. I put a decent spare 1275 in it, painted it (using a brush) with a mix of leftover Rustoleum paint that generally ended up a blue-ish tint and christened it "The Blue Bodge". It's basically a running parts car while he looks for a good tub.

We do call the truck "512" (it is former FDNY Unit # 512....still has big "512" numbers on it).

Unit 512

Like my cat, none of my vehicles has a gender.

Note to Dave: if Microsoft gets its way, we will all be talking to our toasters soon.

We sometimes refer to my TR-3 as "Little Red," because my dad calls his 1929 Franklin 130 "Big Red."

Although I generally don't name my cars, because I'd be likely to call them things that I couldn't repeat in front of my girls. The usual names for my cars in this house are: The TR-3, The TR7, The '69 Corvette, The Silver Corvette, The Dodge, The White Corvette That Hasn't Moved In Six Months, The Intrigue and That Frigging Expedition
