whats causing my SCUTTLE SHAKE !!!!

Had a shaking problem after all new suspension, including brakes, front rotors, re cut drums and eventually a balanced drive shaft. Took the new wires to Hendrix Wire Wheel in Greensboro, NC, https://www.hendrixwirewheel.com/ Hendrix Wire Wheel where Alan tuned the new wires, installed new Tires and then put each wheel and tire in a shaving machine, where the tire is shaved to acquire a perfectly round surface. A lot of race car people take their mounted tires to him just for that service! When these wheels and tires were mounted on the car, the results were fantastic to say the least! No shake or vibrations and the car drove straight as a die and steered with my little finger, (No Joke)! Before my TF hits the road, all 5 wheels will get the Hendrix treatment. I won't even take it around the block before that is done. Incidentally, Alan and Jerry ar not only true professionals, their a couple of very nice guys! PJ

Oh yeah, his machines are set up for splined wheels.

57 BN4;;; thanks for the info. I'll try it today. Where exacly is the balancing ring found? on the drum itself? Please walk me through it like I'm a 6 yr old,it's all new ground to this novice.

NO Donny there is no ring. The balancing of the drums is done on a lathe. Similarly, the wheels and tyres are done on special machines.
Wheels,Tyres and drums must be sent out to specialists for correction.

Note some drums were equipped with damper springs but they were to minimise squeal.---Keoke

Ok , Keoke; so no DIY fix on the drums.I'll have to wait till another paycheck or so and get them done by a pro. Do you have a ballpark figure on how much I should expect getting the drums ballanced will run me ?

Yeah finding a pro would be nice.
However, you might ask the "Wheel Guy" on this forum he seems to know people in this business- and he certainly has a feel for prices.--Keoke

Hi Donny,

Can do, although I won't be able to get any pics until tomorrow.

Basically there are two types of balancing- static where the heavy part just falls to the bottom by gravity and dynamic where the heavy part of the spinning drum causes it to try and rotate off-center (vibration).

Static balance is easy to do but not as accurate as dynamic, although probably adequate to get rid of vibration felt at cruising speed. You need to mount the drum on the hub using well cleaned and ungreased bearings and no seal for the lowest friction possible. Then just let the heavy part fall to the bottom while thrumming on the suspension with a rubber mallot. File off metal from the heavy side until the drum has no preference for any position. This requires disassembling the differential to do the rear so it is probably easier to send them out to a shop unless you have a spare empty diff housing to use.

Re the balancing ring- here is a pic of my rear drum before balancing, you can see where the factory has machined metal off to balance it. I think the later drums are a different style and don't have the balancing ring so it may be a case of filing a small amount off the periphery ring(s) to achieve the same result. I'm sure somebody can chime in and say how 'dangerous' DIYing brake repairs is, however the amount of metal you have to file off will just smooth off the rough cast surface. I filed the inward side of the periphery ring to balance the front drums (BN4) so they don't look any different when the wheels are on.

Cheers,
Andy.

Hi Donny.. Your car has the rib drums. They look different from the early drums in the above picture. the rib drums are usually out more than the early drums.

Just a short update for anyone interested. I found a machine shop in toun that's going to ballance my drums for me. He said it'll be $55 per drum and he's going to grind off the outer edge of them till they're ballanced. I'll give another update when I get them back and the car back together for a test drive. Really hoping this does away with the shakes at 65 mph. Sure would be nice to go faster than that.

You may want to ask them to see if the drums are true to the center. I believe that many drums were ground off center thus causing the weight being off.

Just got off the phone with the machine shop working on the drums. He just started on the first one and told me it's 134 grams out of ballance. he said " I'll bet that ol'car of yers was shakin' like a dog shtn needles " I told him that pretty much summed up the case.

1 gram = 0.035273962 ounces----

I got the drums back from the machine shop today. All balanced and ready to go. He told me that they were off center, causing most of the balance problem. 134 and 136 grams of meterial removed from each. I hope to have my baby back on the road and rollin' around this time next week. I'll let you know what that "dog" does when i get up to speed on the highway. 60-65 mph was when she'd start shakin "LADSN" before the balancing. Hoping to hit 80 like glass, proving the drums to be the fix i needed.

Isn't 80 above the speed limit out there? :driving:

Mine were only off by one or two. They should be back this week. I'm not expecting much improvement. I guess the wheels and tires will have to be sent off next.

I sent my wheels to the"Wheelguy", aka Hendrix Wire Wheel. They trued them and mounted new tires and balance them. I had little shake before at 65 mph but only very little. I thought that was normal. But WOW! like silk to over 80 mph. Good job guys. I haven't been able to drive much till now due to snow. I'm a believer!

Is there a torque value for the nuts holding the hubs to drums?? or just good n tight?

Same Q for the front hubs too ?

Donny, I used the values in the manual for the steel wheels. I figured that was pretty much the same application as the hubs. 720-750 inch lbs.
