what year is this motor?

Block number 18V893AEL000405.(Yes its 893)
The Moss parts catalogue production data only lists engines for MGB's up to 18V883AEL etc for the '77 through '80 models.
Just wondering if this was even an MGB motor? Can anyone offer some insight?
Little hard to see from the poor pix but it is a 9 for sure and this engine was in my 74 up until I found the correct numbered one for my year and rebuilt it.
I haven't looked to see if its got the piston liners yet and hence if its worth rebuilding.
Thanks for any help.......Mark

my 74 1/2 MGB has engine # 18V836Z-l3468.
It is the original engine.
Are you sure that its not the correct engine for your car?
Emmett

It seems that your engine was first built in August of 1976. Since it has such a low engine#, I would assume that it was built in August of 76, probably making it a 1977 engine. It was also built for the Canadian market.
Good luck on your rebuild!

Thanks for the posts Emmett,I'm pretty sure that it is not the original motor just from looking through the receipts supplied by the PO.Shows a motor replacement charge amoungst the many other charges throughout the years as well as many tow charges when it was driven by the PO's daughter at college for a year or two.All told about $4000.00 in shop charges by the daughter and looking at the charges, they were taking her for a ride I think.
Also the 893AEL part of the number had me going a bit because Mosses list stops at 883AEL,at least the list they show in the latest parts catalogue.
It was probably made late in production is my guess. Not that I'm planning a rebuild soon or anything but I've got it just in case.I'm hoping the present rebuild lasts beyond me actually ...lol
The rebuilt engine I have in it now is close to the correct number for an early 74 18V672ZL which is I think for a NON -OD car but mine has the OD.

Dang thing probably has the sleeves in it but It would still be ok for another rebuild if needed.
Thanks..........Mark

Mark, The date stamp or "clock" on the engine block is just below the distributor. It will be a raised set of figures in a circle. the dateorder will be month, day and year if memory serves.

Great info 19 again! thanks I'll look when the outside temp cooperates a bit ...
Mark

I couldn't resist..I went out and checked the area in question.I don't see a clock or circle shape there but a bunch of numbers, perhaps i missed it but here's a pic.

Not so much what as who.

Clausager, as in Anders Ditlev Clausager. Author of "Original MGB" and a bunch of other LBC titles.
