what would you do?

Hello everyone, I'm new here and what a great site to learn about my 1977 mg midget. My quesion is what would you do to the motor and carb if you were exempt from emission testing. I want a little snappier response. I don't want to do any major engine work, just removal of emission stuff and carbs, headers and any other ideas. Thanks, Jerry Mac

Welcome to this outstanding forum. Am a Triumph guy myself, but you will definately get a response from your MG compatriots. Again, welcome and keep in touch.

One of the cheapest and easiest things you can do that will greatly improve preformance is install a DGV downdraft Weber and header. The next step would be to go to the DCOE, but then you are talking about some BUCKS. That would require some internal engine mods. That's the kind of engine Gary is talking about.

I'd definitely look into replacing the Stromberg carb, either with the aforementioned Weber, or even the UK market twin SU's. Other than that, a simple header and performance exhaust would do nicely and not require a whole lot of internal work. You may be able to get some more info from the Triumph guys, cause the 1500 mill in your Midget is the same as the Spitfire 1500 unit. My old '76 never ran well enough for me to contemplate performance mods!

Thanks guys, hey if anyone has a weber carb that would like to trade for the Stromburg and all of the emission attachments, let me know! Also, looking for some front shocks. Thanks, Jerry

Oh Really?

Well Tony have I got something for you to add to your collection.

On ebay late last year I purchased an entire ZS carb complete with its manifold and air cleaner. I figured I would rebuild the carburetor and keep it on hand as a spare. While it is missing the auto choke, everything else seemed intact. That is until I started to take it apart. Turns out some want-a-be auto(none)motive Fing’ineer (intentional misspelling) drilled & tapped a hole and then placed a phillips head screw on the bottom of the Piston. I assume that this was to keep the carb from closing all the way. As that rascally Wabbit once said “What a maroon”…..

Currently I keep this around for a good laugh now & then when friends are over but I would gladly let it go to you for a good piston.

Bret-Why on earth would you want to keep the carb from closing all the way? Stalling?

Tony-I may still have my Stromberg adjusting tool somewhere. I used to keep it in my Miata as a gag,
along with a points gapping tool.

That’s the joke William. Not really sure what this guy was thinking. It does make a funny paperweight/conversation piece though.

The puzzled look as guests pick it up to inspect this thing is priceless.

Don't know what I could do with it...but, what parts do you need to repair yours?

Just the piston Tony. Everything else looks great.

Email me if you can help?

Thanks,

I've a box full of disassembled Zeniths....several pistons in it!

Not that I'm in a hurry or anything, this has been sitting on the back burner for some time now. But what would you consider a fair $$ for one?

Macker - I'm working on a project similar to yours. 75 Midget 1500. I'll be using a British market dual HS2 intake manifold and a Pace header. I got the SUs & intake from TSI and the Pace exhaust (4 into 2 into 1) from Mechspec. There are intake manifolds with HS4s available for the 1500 engine, if you are interested.
I'm just shooting in the dark here, learning a new engine as I go along. [ no valve stems seals - what's with that anyway?]. Good luck with it. I'll post the results when it gets put together.

Hey GT's,

Hey I just got a header off of ebay and I have no idea what make it is. It is suppose to fit a 1500. Hopefully I can just bolt it on. Will have to modify the exhaust pipe and remove the catilitic converter. I'm looking for a heat shield if you know where one is. I'm also removing all of the emission control components. What do you think, am I doing the right thing? Thanks, Jerry

Guys, I also have a long 3-pipe header for a 1500 Midget!...
...contact me off-bbs about the piston - or header!

Just looking at the different parts, I don't think the existing heat shield (even if I had it) would be useable. I'll have to make one. Easy enough though. I'll post a picture of the Pace header when I figure out how to do a picture post. What carb(s) are you planning on using?
On a separate topic, I sure wish the MG blocks were of the same quality as these 1500 blocks. The surface grain of the metal is finer, there is less casting slag, the head's oil drainback holes around the pushrods are tapered to assist drainback, etc.

Watch out for how that header actually lines up to the ports on the head. Get yourself some prussian blue (or it's equivalent these days) and see where the header actually sits on the port. Also check your flange thicknesses (thickness', thicknessess,

? ) to make sure the exh header flange is the same as the intake header.

One more thing about those 1500 castings, the head porting is much better than the MG. No big exhaust guide bump and better surfaces inside the ports.

I replaced the single Stromberg on my 1500 with twin SU HS4's and WOW what a difference. I have also removed the pollution control equipment.
