What to take ...tools...parts? .. tools...parts?

So Janel's thread about being bored and ready for G-Burg and wondering about what to take along got me thinking...

What would you take along for a mix or tools or parts? I won't be going to G-Burg - conflicts with family vacation. But it reminded me that I keep a bin (Walmart, $2) bungeed in the other battery box wherever I go. This was packed for a longish trip I took a couple of years ago and I forgot what was in it. I just dug it out and here's what was in it:

Unpacked (honestly - all of this stuff was in there)

I keep a quart of oil and a container of brake/clutch fluid in the boot. I only carry a few tools in the glovebox when I travel (Swiss army knife, vicegrip and a wire cutter), but here's what I would take IF I were going /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

This stuff all fits in the glovebox:

What other tools/parts are you taking?

I would inclued a ratchet and a few appropiate sockets and the tag end of a roll of duct tape. man are you organized, where is the packing list. LOL

Re: What to take ...tools...parts? .. tools...part

Yup, I'm not that organized. But, I usually just open a bag and start throwing useful looking stuf in it. Sad... but true. I mostly rely on preventative maintenance and dumb luck.

Re: What to take ...tools...parts? .. tools...part

You do realize that I will never, ever need any of this stuff, right? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't see a corkscrew in there! That's the first thing we pack!

Right, if you have it you will not need it, Jacks Rule #3.

Swiss Army Knife attachment /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif.
Probably the most used attachment.

Mickey that reminds me of what my uncle used to carry in his truck's tool box. It was a pint of whiskey and a cigar. He decided he'd just sit and wait for someone to find him and give him a ride home. I always thought he was a strange fellow, but as I get older ... he doesn't seem so odd.

Re: What to take ...tools...parts? .. tools...part

I carry basic tools... Multi screwdriver, micro screwdrivers, adjustable wrench, standard, slim and needle nosed pliers, knockoff hammer, multimeter, laytex gloves, shop rags, various sockets, ratchet handle, socket extension, common size combo wrenches, wire stripper, side cutter, vise grips, feeler gauge, mini jumper cables.

For parts, again just the basics... points, condenser, rotor cap, dizzy cap, plugs, fuel hose, motor oil, inner tube, fan belt.

For longer trips a few extras... fuel pump, control box, brake fluid, generator brushes and bearing.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few items but that's the basic idea.

Where do you purchase the "owners workshop manual"? I have seen several other books and have a few but not that one.It looks interesting

I keep an extra fan belt under the front seat always after trying to find one in Hawaii on a sunday afternoon.

First photo, right side /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Might want to measure it; last one I got from Moss was too short.

I always take too much!

But, I learned from my mother....."It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!"

Also related to things other than tools and spares.

Re: What to take ...tools...parts? .. tools...part

Well, in a Midget... space is limited. So, I pack what I personally need, then start throwing tools and parts in bags to fill up the rest of the empty space. I always take an extra gallon of gas so that I do not need to fret over being in a rural area too far from the next filling station. I used to carry a CB also, but lately I've been relying on a cell phone.

That's what I would expect to hear from a pharmacist.

Essentials- mobile phone & Automobile Association memebrship cars....

A Flashlight.
Small voltmeter with continuity checker.

I note too that the parts look new.

I prefer to put the new parts on the car (Maximum reliability from having them, then) and using the older parts if they're still good as the back-ups.

This is a little more economical, and has the added benefit of allowing you to quickly fix any incorrectly supplied or faulty replacements very easily with parts of "proven" functionality.

Re: What to take ...tools...parts? .. tools...part

got a trunk full of random parts. I need to go through it and ditch what's not needed or not useful. Also have a huge honkin' tool box in there that's the least useful tool box I've ever had due to its odd internal dimensions it makes it difficult to keep all the tools I like to keep in it.

I'm currently looking for a fair size tool BAG to put back there. If packed right, it'd take up 1/4 the space of the tool box I have back there right now.

The Bentley's manual includes the original handbook within its pages. And it's by far the best reapir manual out there.
