MGB-GT What to do with the BGT?

I wasn't prepared for the arrival of the BGT.
It has no interior to mention since a new floorpan and cross member were just welded in, motor is solid, needs new brakes all round (inc master cyl) and clutch. I wanted it to be a DD, but it appears that may be on the pricey side.
The wife says flip it.
I would personally like to try my hand at some autocross or vintage racing, that's my dream.
Let me know what you all think please, this is hard.

Turn it, make a buck.

Pics would be helpful....But my vote says turn it, great way to make some cash to go towards the next project....Heck, it got me through college.

Pics are here - front and back.
Still hasn't had a bath yet so imagine the paintwork a little less dusty!

Where, in central Illinois, would you race? Putnam Park in Indy, Gingerman in Michigan, Elkhart Lake in WI, ..perhaps St.Louis...none real close....

Just curious.

looks like a solid flipper to me.

I understand how barren it is around here Rick, and it's purely an experimental consideration at this point, I like the idea more than the reality of that; however we are considering a move out west after I finish school here.
I'd try some autocrossing first, just to get an idea of both the cars and my, capabilities. Ragging around small twisty roads in Wales is one thing.....

Set it up, Barry. Replace the rear glass with Plexi, find things to "add lightness" and flog it!!!

Flip it. Make some $$$ and take on another one. More $$$ in the kitty for a full resto!

R.

My word, Barry has a blast cabnet, a big one.

::drool:: All those lovely PARTS!

I used to have a team name, WOFTAM Racing, and team shirts with a logo that said"If you have golf balls, golf"
The next line encouraged you to race.

The car would be ideal for a low-cost autocrosser, you already have the interior stripped out! This is a good way to get into racing, learn the skills and try it out without a big financial committment.

Most vintage race sanctioning bodies have a cutoff date of 1972, I am not sure what year your car is. It is always cheaper to buy a car already prepared for racing than to build one.

Last thought, wire wheels are heavy, and there are not many tire choices in 14 inch sizes so you may want to change to a wider and lighter set of wheels.
Go racing, live your dream!
Simon.

I say race it too. I have a midget I've always wanted to do that with. Now I have another GT and would think about racing it too but my rust is bad. A good car to practice welding on and if I bugger it up, race it.

I've considered selling the wires, to help fund some stronger lighter wheels, Rick is ahead of me with the minilites.
Mrs vetoed racing (hate it when she uses that), but approved autocross, so it's very likely it will become a hot DD, with some mods such as webers, elec ignition, big alternator, full peco, new cams, lifters and reconditioned head & valves. Keep it legal but have some fun with it also.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Sorry Bud! The O/D in it would be a terrible thing to lose, even if it doesn't work.

You will REALLY like Minilytes or the equivalent. They completely transformed my MGC.

Autocrossing can be a LOT of fun...and is a LOT less expensive than racing, in MANY ways!

Have fun!

Just curious, what exactly is Autocrossing? Where do you sign up and how much can you expect to spend?

cone racing in a parking lot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

it can be really good fun from what I hear. I certainly want to give it a whirl /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif
