I'm having a tough time making a decision - help me out here.
I was going to buy a Cortina MKIII 2000GT,& sell my MKIII
to pay for most of it.The deal fell through,so now I'm thinking about the '77 5 speed TR7 that I looked at.
The MKIII has a fair amount of work tht could be done to it.
I realise that if I sold it,& bought the TR7,I might be asking for more problems. The TR7 is a kick to drive, but the
Cortina is very rare & unique.
Maybe it's time for a change,& buy one of them there
"modern" cars.BTW,the Cortina only has 77,000 miles on it-
-& it's a '72.
Ideas,suggestions?

Why do you torture me so??

Doug, I'll likely take some flak here from the wedgie crowd but: Keep th' Ford. If you haven't had to contend with a TR7 before, you may have buyer's remorse in a few months. They're fun when they're right, that I admit.

's all I'm gonna say. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Nomex ON, helmet face shield DOWN.

Tough question. I've grown partial to wedges lately, even the 4cyl variants. That Cortina would probably still be pretty reliable, though TR7s can be very reliable as well. Tough decision, good luck.

I've been a TR guy since my first TR4 I got back in the stone age...circa 1964. Since then I've had a slew of TR's from 3's to 6's. Although the 'Wedge' is a superior car in many respects, to me, it isn't the TR that has always appealed to me. That raw, brutish, uncivilized rattle-trap that exudes testosterone is just lacking in the TR7. Besides, they don't seem to have the reliabilty or robustness of the TR2's-TR6's. For those more docile, reliable, and refined sports car moments (relatively speaking), I drive my Miata. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

I agree, keep the Cortina and look for a decent 1.6 Miata to fill the place you think the TR7 fits.

Art,

Sorry, but if I replace the Cortina,it's got to be
British.Besides,I still have the '67 Cortina MKII GT.
When I had my MKI GT I believe that I was the only one
in the US to have a MKI,MKII,& MKIII at the same time.
My "claim to fame".

My gut says to keep the Ford. TR7s have grown on me, and I've ridden in one and it's nice, but it's not my thing, really. Now a TR8...

Tintop versus a roadster?

No contest!

I have always thought that it would be neat to buy a TR7 and get rid of that big "swoop" along the side (sorry if some of you guys like that feature....but it's the one thing that bothers me about the last TRs). Actually, I think a TR7 without the "swoop" and fixed headlights under plexiglass (like the kits for older Miatas) would really be a very nice looking car.

I owned a Cortina and even raced a 1600 in a 1 hour in '05. They're OK....for a sedan.

Guy stopped by today & offered me a TR7 convertible for $1,000....which means he's got a lower figure in his mind.

Dr.E - that's the one thing that I've noticed about the TR7's styling - people either love it,or they hate it.
I'm one of those who's always liked it.

Tough call.

But isn't the Cortina MkIII smog exempt in Kalifornia? I think the TR7/8s where produced from 74 to 82? So all but the 74 model year would need to pass emissions testing every two years. Whole nother can-o-words if you don't already have to deal with it.

That said I'd stick with the Ford and keep looking.
