I'm going to be installing a new engine in the Courier next week--the present one is running fine with no metal in oil or filter but is a bit tired. I'll be washing all the oil lines and installing a new oil cooler but wonder what if anything I need to do to the Accusump. Do I need to remove and disassemble it prior to starting up the new engine?
 
IMO (I'm conservative BTW) it'd be best to pull it apart and clean everything well...

But you'll likely be fine just flushing everything out if you have no residue evidence.

When I spun a couple bearings in my last big healey motor, in addition to replacing the oil cooler and lines, I sent my Accumsump back to them for a complete rebuild. I think it was about $85.00 with shipping to the west coat.

Can My Accusump Be Rebuilt?

Yes. For a fee Canton Racing Products can rebuild your accusump for you. Rebuild service consists of cleaning out the Accusump, installing new o-rings, and pressure testing the unit. Please leave the air gauge attached to the unit. The Electric Valve or Electric Pressure Control Valve can also be cleaned for a small fee. Important: Empty all the oil from unit before shipping. Oil filled Accusumps can cause problems during shipping and a hazardous waste fee will be applied. Please package the unit securely and include your name, address, and day time contact information, and a note as to why it requires a rebuild.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I should have mentioned that I have a spare unit on hand that Canton racing disassembled and cleaned, so I'll be conservative and install it and send this one back to them. Sometimes I spend more time thinking about doing something than it takes to actually do it.
 
In order to get a wrench on the street ell going into the top of the Accusump I needed to remove the pressure relief valve. I neglected to relieve the residual pressure before doing so and got a cup or two of oil blown into my face! Other than that the changeover was a piece of cake.
 
I'd say it belongs in the "Dumb Things I Have Done" file.

If you purchase a large pair of snap ring pliers for about $50 you can easily disassemble the accumulator and save yourself the $85.00. There is no need to replace the o-rings every time - they will last for many rebuilds. I clean out my accumulator with every rebuild. I last changed O-rings about 15 years ago.
