What size bolt to secure handbrake assembly?

Good morning everyone. Going for a small victory today in reattaching the Bugeye handbrake to the transmission cover.

Does anyone know what size bolt is correct to attach the plate mechanism to the transmission tunnel?

I'm specifically referring to part #24 on the Handbrake diagram in the attached picture. (taken from https://www.victoriabritish.com/icatalog/sm/0103.html)

It feels like the tunnel has a captive nut inside. Is that correct?

She is a '59.

Yes as I remember there are captive nuts in side the tunnel. You are just going to have to try a few bolts till you find the right one, fine thread in what I call the small size, sorry. The whole thing must be assembled before you attach that plate including connecting the cable.

I'll do the trial and error thing at Ace Hardware later today I guess.... They think (perhaps quite correctly) that I'm nuts. "Here comes that guy who always buy a handful of different sizes and then returns them...."

It is either a 1/4 or 5/16 SAE fine thread.

I just did it. 5/16th, fine thread. Captive bolts

Any problems with me putting stainless steel bolts there? I don't believe it's a high stress point...

Use what you wish, anything that fits will work.
