I am getting really close to time for a battery. I will be installing the gauges and switches this week. I have seen groups 22, 24 and 26 offered as correct and now I am confused. Also, I have checked my tachometer and think is is still set for positive earth. I don't want a radio or electronic ignition and if I need to charge my phone, I'll do it before I leave home, so I don't have any reason to convert.

I just had a look at a battery supplier's page for various years and models, and they identified a swack of different Groups as being suitable. I suggest that you follow the approach we used decades ago when our Bugeye was our only car (summer and winter): measure the size of the hole, and buy the biggest battery that would fit in it. Make sure the posts were going to be the right place and that the height wasn't excessive. Maybe put a battery box in the hole first as well or something like an election campaign sign to provide a bit of a non-conducting, non-rusting layer.
I don't remember if the passenger side grab handle has a piece of wood behind the dash, but put one in there and attach a cigarette lighter/power take-off to the wood (so no worries about what to ground to) - we did this for our 3000. It's not visible, but can provide a GPS connection (or a phone connection, etc.)

Thanks. Sounds like good advice.

I got a very nice one at Costco for my Bugeye... the only issue was to be sure to get the positive terminal (I still have "+" ground) on the correct side. Wish I could remember what it is... but I could go look.

LHD car jas the positive ground on the driver's side. My recollection is that the post should be closer to the firewall. Doug

Thanks for the additional information. With all the hype, one would hope the Horley book would have much of that. It is a great book and has a lot of historical content but there is so much missing. Well next time I'll know all this stuff. Oh wait, a "next time" is pretty unlikely.
